CAMPBELL'S WEEKEND ROUNDUP - Week 25:

All roads lead to Co. Tipperary over the next number of days. It is championship time and Clonmel CC will be at the helm. The An Post series continues with the Tour de Burren in Clare. Irish Olympic Star, Martyn Irvine, will be the Special Guest at the Ice-Cream Funday for Down Syndrome Ireland at Sundrive Track on Wednesday 27th June with racing starting at 7pm.

CLONMEL CC are not unknown for staging top class events, but from today (Thursday - See Start List at the bottom of this page) on, they will be leading the way when the first series of championships roll out of the starting gate. The grand finale will be on Sunday afternoon when the mens' championships get under way shortly after mid-day.

Interestingly all from what I can illicit is that all the defending champions from last season which was staged very successfully last year by Emyvale CC are standing their ground on courses which by all accounts are very competitive. It is that special day in the calendar when all competitive cyclists come together for their respective national championships in the disciplines of road and time trialling! at senior level.

Matt Brammeier is going for a unique three in a row. Aside of missing out on the selection for Olympic Games in London, Matt will no doubt be eager to create three in a row. He is a professional and I'm sure win lose or draw he will give of his bet on the day. But the current man in form is Nicholas Roche and I would not oppose him. Plus it will be a bonus to see the distinctive champions jersey back in the upcoming Tour de France. As regards the Irish based riders getting something from the top table. It will come in the shape of a team prize. The defending champions are DID/Dunboyne CC and the real challenge will come from the Dan Morrissey-Speedy-Spokes outfit.

Beginning this evening, the race of truth otherwise known as the time trial swings into action this evening. Matt Brammeier will be the centre of attention when he goes for back to back wins. He will be certainly pushed all the way from David McCann who is regarded as one of the best TT on the Irish scene.

As regards the ladies TT, Caroline Ryan stands head and shoulders above all the intended starters. It will be an ideal opportunity for Caroline to attempt to make it a double with the road. But, I am of the opinion that she will come up short when she faces the might of Siobhan Horgan.

Another one who is in the frame to record a double is Greg Swinand in both the road/time trial in the veterans championships. Personally above all others he has the determination and the will to do it. Lately I was in Dublin city and noticed him cycling those rent a bike. "It is a great way of getting around the city.''

In the Espoirs we have strength and depth in that division with the greater percentage of those in that grouping eking a living on far off countries. Like Brammeier who is going for three in a row, we have Sam Bennett, but this time around with Philip Lavery just back from Canada the odds favour the Dubliner. Also the posting of the win in the Stephen Roche Grand Prix is a valuable omen. In the TT section, Sean Downey is the obvious choice.

In the tandem section it has been a good year for those west of the Shannon and the Marrey brothers can take the title, but the defending champions of Oriol Carbo and Kazak Jankowski will push them all the way.

GUEST STAR AT SUNDRIVE TRACK on Wednesday 27th

We are delighted to announce that Irish Olympic Star, Martyn Irvine, will be our Special Guest at the Ice-Cream Funday for Down Syndrome Ireland at Sundrive Track on Wednesday 27th June.

Track Cycling Specialist Irvine has kindly taken time out of his preparations for London 2012 to show his support for his fellow track cyclists and for DSI. He will also present prizes to the winners of the Summer Track League which finishes up after eight weeks of fantastic racing at the outdoor Dublin venue.

Martyn Irvine is a seven-time Irish National Track and Criterium Cycling Champion cyclist who has qualified for the Omnium Track event at the 2012 Summer Olympic Games. The Omnium races start on Saturday August 4th with a Flying Lap 250m Time Trial, a 30 km Points Race and an Elimination Race. On the following day, Martyn will compete in the 4 km Individual Pursuit, 15 km Scratch Race and a 1km Time Trial. Martyn has raced at the highest level all over the world to qualify for these events, and we wish him every success in his races on the new London 2012 Velodrome.

The Summer Track League at the outdoor track on Sundrive Road in Crumlin caters for riders of all abilities and ages. So far this Summer, over 80 riders have taken part in the league, and we hope most of them will be there for the wrap-up night with Martyn. The final night will include racing for all categories, the end of league prize-giving, and an ice-cream fundraiser for DSI.

This May and June, Down Syndrome Ireland, supported by HB Hazelbrook Farm, is asking people to host an ice-cream funday party to raise funds to support people with Down Syndrome across the country. Celebrities like Pierce Brosnan, Michael Flatley and Enda Kenny have been associated with the campaign. The Track Commission has kindly allowed track riders Roisin Kennedy and Kevin Whelan to host the Sundrive Party as part of their fundraising for the charities linked to the ESBI O2O Cycle from Dublin to Cork which took place earlier this month. The suggested donation is € 2 for a portion of ice-cream, and we guarantee that 100% of the money that is collected will be donated to DSI.

The Ice-Cream Funday with Martyn Irvine takes place on Wednesday June 27th at Sundrive Track with racing starting at 7 pm. Further details are available on www.trackcycling.ie
