Galway Criterium

Galway Bay Cycling Club will be hoping that the weather will be much kinder this weekend. They have a busy weekend of activities planned for the 16/17th. The third annual Galway City Criterium takes placed in Galway City Centre around the roads of the Claddagh on Saturday evening June 16th. Two races, an A1/A2 and an A3/A4 of an hour each will take place on a 1.7 k circuit starting and finishing at Claddagh Hall. This is a very flat circuit but it runs along the sea and the wind can play a crucial part in deciding who wins the race so a very fast furious race is guaranteed.

Sign on takes place in Claddagh Hall from 5.30 onwards and the first race the A3/A4 is off at 6.45. The second race A1/A2 starts at 7.45 PM. Both races are an hour plus one lap. €10 entry fee. Cobh and the Leahy Cup Sunday 17th

The 3rd running of the revived Leahy Cup goes ahead in Ballymore C.C in the small town land of Ballymore in Cobh, Co. Cork. They will be hosting a full race program of racing including underage & three senior races. If you thought the town of Cob was buzzing with the all the hype about the 'Titanic 100 years on' think again the whrring of the wheels will be all the go on Sunday afternoon.

The HQ will be The High Chaparral Bar in Ballymore and it will be well sign posted when you enter the island after Fota. Talk about a shoot out in the bar!

Underage sign on will be from 10.45 to 11.30, U12: 11.40am 3.2km X 2 Laps; U14: 12.05 am 3.2km X 5 Laps; U16: 12.40am 3.2km X 8 Laps. The organisation will be represented by Sean Hayes in the U14 race and Jack Delaney plus the elder Kevin Hayes in the U16 race.

Also on the programme will be three senior races and the vibes from the town is that the cyclists will come from all over the province. The A1/A2 combined race will have 10 laps of this great circuit where competitors will be racing for the “Leahy Cup” named after the founding brothers of the club. This will be a great race for rider to test their legs the week before the National Championships in Clonmel on the 24th. The cup was won last year by Cobh’s own Mick Fitzgerald who will to be there on the day to defend his title and will be looking for his first win of the season. We will have our great senior member in the A3 race Eamon Deady who rode with some of the great past winners of the cup like Mick Cahill and the late Bobby Power. In the A4 race we will have Timothy Hayes fresh from his number one placing in Blarney over the June weekend.

Something new that will be seen on the senior course this year will be the man in the boat at 'The Cow Cross', somewhat of a star in Cobh now known as Timmy The Optimist but I am sure he will he will have no impact on the race but should get into a couple of photos !!

Donamon, Service Matters G.P.

The Donamon Dynamos Budget Rent a Car roar into action with 'The Donamon Service Matters G.P. in Castlecoote village on Sunday at 12 noon. Not only JOHN CONCAR and his team have raised the bar for this promotion but there will be meal without the wheels after the racing. Some man for one man, John!

There will be racing for all categories, Juniors and under 16's. The A1s and A2s will race for the Donamon G.P. 70 miles, 7 laps of a testing 10 mile circuit. The A3s, A4s and the Juniors will do 5 laps of the same circuit. The u16s will do 4 laps.

Craig Sweetman of the Stamullen M Donnelly has signified his intentions that he'll be on the blocks to retain the coveted trophy. David Brennan of TFH/Castlebar CC aims to keep the money in the province of Connacht. Of course the bould David is a former winner and the prize money would be a welcome addition in his pocket. Last year the organisers did not use the term “tough times” and gave out close to the thousand mark. And the possibility of leaving Catlecoote village with no prize money, but your belly will be full. Maybe I'll drop in myself and savour the hospitality of John and company.
