CAMPBELL'S WEEKEND ROUNDUP - Week 23:
By Tommy Campbell

It is all go this weekend! Tomorrow, you have the option of taking in Enniskillen or the Neale in Co. Mayo. Saturday if you are in Blarney you'll witness a unique event courtesy of Blarney CC. In the highest village in Ireland also on Saturday, Bray Wheelers and Duff's of Main Street combine for one of the longest standing sponsorships in Irish cycling. On Sunday you have the Navan/Avonmore CC switching on the action for the Sean Nolan/Meath Grand Prix plus all categories are included. PLUS an interesting schedule for the following weekend.

----

Enniskillen Island Town tomorrow, Friday, by Lakeland Cycling Club in partnership with Fermanagh District Council. The event will start at the Town Hall in Enniskillen and will be run over a series of laps run in a clockwise direction around the town on closed roads.

The events starts at 7.30pm with sign on taking place at Pats Bar in 'The Diamond', Enniskillen Town Centre between 6-7pm. There will be a ceremonial start, followed by one neutralised lap. Generous Prize fund on offer 3x 50 pound Primes at 10 minute intervals. Contact Mark Kavanagh 07787 153322 markpkavanagh66@yahoo

JOHN HOLIAN MEMORIAL

Western Lakes CC is promoting the John Holian Memorial Cup cycle race tomorrow evening. John Holian was a founder member of the Western Lakes CC, which was formed back in 1999, he was a great stalwart to cycling in Connacht acting as manager, mechanic and driver to many Connacht teams over the years.

The sign on will be in O'Malley's Bar from 6.15pm race start 7.30pm Cross. The course is over five laps of a seven mile loop. The event will start from the sign on location taking in the Neale and Cong area.

This event is open to all categories from under 16 up (no youths), a handicap system will be in place. The event is sponsored by O'Malley's Bar. First 6 across the line and their will be sprint primes for the different groups. Refreshments and presentation after in O Malley's Bar.

CHRISTY McMANUS MEMORIAL

Bray Wheelers CC plus Duffs hostelry on the Main Street of Bray celebrate this time round 30 years of unbroken sponsorship of the Christy McManus Memorial cycling event. They have had unique times particularly with the weather who on the odd time intervenes!

The recipe for success of this race is that the A1's have a barring order. So, all concerned have the option to flex their muscles and race to their hearts content in the surroundings of Roundwood the highest village in the country and lately in recent weeks, highest pub (Kavanaghs) that is currently trading in Ireland.

I have a feeling that the locals are of the opinion that bike racing in the village is the natural habitat for competitive cycling. Last month you had the Hammond Memorials and the Shay Elliott Memorial skirted the village.

It goes without saying that the club would dearly love to put a piece of silverware in their trophy cabinet and come early Saturday maybe their wish will be realised.

The action gets under way at 9.30 for sign-on with underage racing starting at 10.30am.

Under 12 & U14 races to kick off at 10.30am. Under 16 to kick off at 11am with 2 laps of the Vartry Filter beds circuit [approx 25k]

Roundwood GP to start at 12 noon and this race is for Junior & A4 riders [55k]

Christy McManus Memorial to start at 2pm, for A2 and A3 riders [80k]

Sign on is at Roundwood GAA Hall from 9.30 am onwards

BLARNEY HOSTS UNIQUE EVENT

This Saturday, the 9th of June,is one of those days when Blarney Cycling Club will pull out (not that club renege on other promotions) all the stops for a a unique event. They are running a time trial for hand cyclists, visually impaired cyclists and paracyclists. This will include some of the athletes that will be representing Ireland, in the upcoming Paralympics in London. Current U.C.I world champion hand cyclist Mark Rohan is due to participate in the event.

Also supporting the event are the famous Rebel Wheelers, a multi sports club for kids with physical disabilities from the ages of 5-18. The club was set up in 2008 by a group of parents and the Irish Wheelchair Association. The club encourages children to participate in a wide range of sports and activities including hand cycling.

The event will be a time trial of up to 20km on the old Mallow Road, there will also be shorter distances for the kids. Sign on and start/finish line will be at Rathpeacon National School. Sign-on starts at 11 a.m with the first rider departing at 12 p.m. The event will also be open to all challengers, anyone wishing to give hand cycling a try is more than welcome.

Mark Rohan will also go on a cycle with the kids on the day .The Rebel Wheelers parents are making cakes and local businesses are donating treats for the kids and the big kids too. Frank O'Leary from Cycling Ireland and Michael Crowley Cork Sports Partnership are also supporting the event We hope a good day will be had by all so let’s get out there!

MEATH GRAND PRIX/SEAN NOLAN

It's only an hour from Dublin, but the Navan/Avonmore CC can be relied on to put on a top class programme any day of the week. This Sunday they have a full programme of activities from the underage right to the seniors in all categories. Putting the icing on he cake with a round of the ladies league. The Rugby Club will be the hub where everything will start cranking up for a day of racing in the environs of the Navan town from 9.30 in the morning.

They will have a senior 1 and 2 combined race over 150 kilometres and a 3 and 4 cat race this will be separated depending on the number that turn up but is likely to be two separate races of 2 laps each, here will also be a separate women’s race as part of the national league and the finish is in the usual place.

Sign on at Navan Rugby club, Navan Co. Meath from 10.30. Main race 150km. For details contact John Nolan 087-2238873 Children's racing is on the Cannistown circuit Navan outskirts at 11am. Main races start 1pm Slane Road, using Roadstone Slane, Woodtown, Cassidy, Wilkinstown, Kilberry, Gormanlough lap. The finish is on Proudstown Rd. The main race is (150km) and the supporting events are 90kms (A3) and 70kms for A4's. Also the Womens Commission are running an event which was only confirmed in the last day or so. That event has a schedule start of 1.10 over 84kms.

After the An Post Ras many of the A1's will face their counterparts as the season heads for the Nationals which will be held in Clonmel later in the month. Thankfully, some might say a race just short of 90 miles will certainly be an appetiser for the upcoming National Championships. The Swords Grand Prix threw up an interesting result last Sunday in Ballybough with An Post's Sean Kelly teams Ronan McLoughlin getting the verdict.

But, this Sunday McLoughlin is back on the European mainland. So, on last weekends showing it would be hard to oppose the likes of Aaron Buggle, Ryan Sherlock Craig Sweetman and Shane Baker.

WICKLOW 200 and WICKLOW 100 This Sunday

This year we are witnessing the growth as anticipated in spotives, both in terms of new events and increased cyclists who want to enjoy cycling at a leisurely pace.

The Wicklow 200 is a non-competitive cycle ride that takes place this Sunday. It covers 200 kilometres around the roads of beautiful County Wicklow (the Garden of Ireland) and attracts 2000 plus cyclists from many different countries. The shorter Wicklow Challenge takes place on the same day, and shares most of its route with the Wicklow 200.

The route is very challenging. It includes many climbs, big and small, with some up to a height of 500 metres. The total climb is over 2000 metres so the event should not be taken lightly. While every year many cyclists who have never attempted a similar challenge before complete the Wicklow 200 successfully, it requires attention to training and preparation. Starting at 7:00 am. riders are allowed up to 14 hours to complete the route, although most finish well inside that.

Wonderful crowds turned out for the event last year which was won by Martin Irvine from local rider Damien Shaw with Stephen O'Sullivan taking third.
