The An Post Ras may hold all the cards with up to the minute reports by Shane Stokes on www.irishcycling.com, but the domestic scene is not taking a back seat! The leisure activity one the cycling scene continues to be a hive of activity with a number of events on the programme this weekend. Still, the competitive scene is equally in fine fettle with events this Saturday and Sunday.

West Down Grand Prix

It is all go for the 'West Down Wheelers' who will promote the West Down G P on Saturday. Not one but three events are scheduled by the promoting club.

The (A) Race for A2/A3 category riders is limited to 80 riders, and likewise the (B) for A4 category riders with the Masters/Ladies (over 50's and Ladies).

The (A) race will cover 5 laps of the circuit and on the last lap it will take in the tough Rathfriland Hill and then back again to the finish at Katesbridge, similar to last year. The race distance is approx 56 miles. The winner will receive the ‘’West Down G P Cup’’ there will also be cash prizes for the first 5 to cross the line.

The (B) race will cover 4 laps of the circuit with a race distance of approx 44-mile; again there will be cash prizes for the first 5 to cross the line.

Masters/Ladies race will cover 2 laps with a race distance approx 22 miles; there will be cash prizes for the first 3 to cross the line.

Entry fees for races (A) & (B) £10, Masters/Ladies £5. Sign-On from 9.30am - 10.30am -Race starting at 11.00am.

There are still places available for the Senior races so if you want to register contact Davy Cartmill on (0) 782 735 1574 to register your interest.

This is always a great event and the refreshments afterwards are excellent.

Race HQ, Sign-On, Changing and race start location at the Katesbridge Hall, post code BT32 5NG. The Prize giving and usual refreshments (tea, sandwiches & buns etc) after the race will be at the Katesbridge Hall.

Emyvale Grand Prix

All raids lead to the Emyvale Grand Prix which will be held this Sunday. The event will be sponsored by New Holland Tractors with sign on in Tydavnet Community Centre.

As in previous years, Emyvale are organising a full programme of Youth racing. The Youth races have the Emyvale Credit Union as their anchor sponsors and the start is in Tydavnet village at 11am . Prize giving for the youth races will take place in the car park at the finish line immediately after the races end. Youth riders are reminded that they should come with their bikes in the correct gear and all bikes will be checked.

The senior races begin at one o'clock with the competitors now going in the opposite direction to recent years so as to bring the finish of all races into the village.

The bonus is that the course is in pristine condition thanks to the efforts of the authorities in the are. The roads were resurfaced for last year's national championships which received wide acclaim for the organisation far and wide.
The Emyvale Grand Prix Trophy has many distinguished names on it. A who's who of Irish cycling Kevin Kimmage, Laurence Roche, Mark Scanlon and Martyn Irvine.

No doubt with that pedigree of names, the organisation are sure to have numbers in abundance. a Sign on is open from 9.30am- Youth races €5 and seniors €10. All categories are catered for and according to the organiser George McCarron, there will be a welcome on the mat.

Barrow Wheelers Grand Prix this Sunday (pre entry only)


The A1/2/A3,/A4 categories are being catered for by the Barrow Wheelers Grand Prix. The opportunity to tackle a former climb used in the Tour of Ireland? Barrow Wheelers will hold their inaugural Barrow Wheelers Grand Prix on this Sunday in New Ross Co. Wexford.

The event will be staged from the Good Counsel College New Ross, with the riders taking to the roads of South Kilkenny for the event. The event is being run on a 27km circuit featuring a climb on the Listerlin Mullinavat road used previously in the Tour of Ireland no less.

The circuit is a left handed one except for the aptly named "pigs elbow" bend on the fast flowing descent back to the bottom of the course and finishes at Rosbercon at the old Wall Steel premises.

Three separate races for A1/A2 (+ first 3 unplaced A2), A3 & A4 ( including First lady).

NB The organisation have restricted the field to eighty (80) riders per race in the interest of safety and event is pre-entry only to facilitate this. (log onto www.barrowwheelers.com to pre-enter.

A1/ A2 Race 109km (4 Laps of 27km circuit) starting at 12 midday

A3 Race 109km (4 Laps of 27km circuit) starting at 12.05

A4 Race 80km (3 Laps of 27km circuit) starting at 12.10

To get to the start take the ring road around New Ross and if coming from a northern direction follow the N30 up hill until you get a set of traffic lights. Continue on a few hundred meters and entrance is on left hand side. If coming from a southern direction again Take the N30 and before you come to the traffic lights at Irishtown, entrance is on right hand side. There is ample parking and showers as well as refreshments provided before and after the event.

There will be secure parking at the venue

Mick Byrne Randonee

Nice one to get into trim for upcoming events, particularly the likes of the 'Wicklow 200.'
Sorrento's Cycling Club which was founded by the late Mick Byrne. They are having a Randonee in his honour, this Sunday, 100km, 160km, 200km (Audax Event). Start/sign on; Dalkey United Football Club, Hyde Road, Dalkey,Co Dublin. Start times; 8.00am 200km , 9.00am 160km, 10.00am 100km. Feed stations and mechanic/bonk wagon on call. Refreshments afterwards. These events are run in aid of the Irish Hospice Foundation. The 200km is a tough event with over 3000m of climbing through Dublin, Wicklow and Wexford

Tour of Lough Derg

The Tour of Lough Derg will be hosted by North Tipperary Wheelers this Sunday. Start and finish is at The Lakeside Hotel in Ballina, Co. Tipperary. Start time 10.30am - sign on from 9.15am. Refreshments before, during and after and showers available. Spot prizes. €15 with licence - €25 without. Lead car and support vehicles. Two groups will be riding the 120k (72ml) course - one leaving at 9.30am and averaging 14mph and the second leaving at 10.30am and averaging a minimum of 18mph.

Two-Day Sponsored Cycle

A number of the paramedics associated with the National Ambulance Service in Birr County Offaly are planning to cycle a two day road run to raise money for The Crumlin Medical & Research Foundation of Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Crumlin. They are looking for other cyclists to take part. Details are as follows: 26th & 27th May 2012. - Saturday 26th 11:30am in Longford Town & onto Ballymahon, Athlone, Mullingar & Edenderry. Sunday 27th 11:30am in Tullamore & onto Birr, Roscrea, Borris in Ossary, Mountrath & Portlaoise. There will be minibuses & a bike carrying lowloader to assist cyclist who may not be able to cycle the whole distance. Comeragh 100k Tour

Annual Comeragh Tour in Ballymacarbry, Co. Waterford in aid of Special Olympics. It is a 100km cycle that circumvents the very beautiful and scenic Comeragh Mountains but it also includes 2 OPTIONAL sorties into the mountains with climbs of Mahon Falls & Seskin hill, both made famous in the Irish Nissan Classic. Event In Summary: Event Title : Comeragh Tour next Sunday(27th). Location: Start & Finish at Ballymacarbry, Co. Waterford (on R671 between Dungarvan & Clonmel). Time: Start Time 10am sharp.
