MOUNT LEINSTER CHALLENGE - Saturday 19th May - Booked out - Entry CLOSED

Slaney CC's annual Mount Leinster Challenge has again been fully subscribed and the online entry is closed. There will be NO entry on the day. The event goes from strength to strength and Slaney are delighted to welcome many of our old friends back again. In particular again this year we have a huge entry from Orwell Wheelers for their away day and have visitors coming to Enniscorthy from as faraway as Kilarrney in the south and Belfast in the north.

Sign-on is from 8am at the GAA grounds in Bellefield, Enniscorthy and the roll will take place at 9.30am. The main feedstop is again in Kiltealy. As the forecast is uncertain at the moment something warm and waterproof is recommended! Our service crews will be on the roads but now is a good time to double check your bikes tyres, brakes, gears and especially chains which the Corrobutt Gap has a habit of chewing up!

Keep an eye on the Slaney club website for event updates. Don't forget if you've missed this one we also have our Ferns/ St Lukes Challenge on July 22nd which also takes in the beautiful (and hilly!) countryside of Wexford & Carlow.

TEMPLE STREET CHARITY CYCLE - Saturday 19th May

Temple Street Cycle - this could be your lucky day - D.I.D Electrical have created a sponsored cycle for The Temple Street Children's Hospital. The cycle will take place on Saturday and starts in Dunboyne. There are 3 different cycles, 1 small for families, 1 medium and 1 long cycle (approx 120k) The money raised will go to life saving equipment for the Children's Hospital. We are trying to get awareness. We are on Facebook as 'cycle4life' (please like and share) and www.cycle4life.ie

If you could spread the word among your club cyclists who might be interested in doing a sponsored cycle for this great cause, I would really appreciate your help. D.I.D would like to develop it into a big annual event, so if you could pass this onto anyone you think could help and get people involved in the sponsored cycle. D.I.D are even giving away to a lucky cyclist, doing the sponsored cycle a Garmin Edge 500 and another cyclist an IPad2...not bad.

THE AN POST RAS STARTS THIS SUNDAY

The An Post Rás is an annual, eight-day, stage race around Ireland. The race is Ireland's number one cycling event and will take place from May 20th - 27th, 2012.

This is the second year of An Post's sponsorship of the celebrated Rás Tailteann, which is more commonly known as The Rás. This is a special year for the race, it being the 60th edition of The Rás. The epic race began in 1953 and has been held every year since. It is one of Ireland’s top sporting events bringing world class sporting action and a significant economic boost to towns and villages nationwide.

The Rás has a worldwide reputation of being a gruelling challenge in the elite, international calendar. The open racing style allows amateur county and club riders to pit themselves against domestic and international professionals.

This year's race gets underway in Dunboyne, Co. Meath. It will then move clockwise around the country, and includes stage finishes in Kilkenny, Gort, Westport, Bundoran, Buncrana, Killybegs and Cootehill, before concluding with the now-customary crowd-thronged finale in Skerries, North County Dublin.

The route covers 1168 kilometres with 28 categorised climbs, including three of the country's most challenging ascents.

ENTRIES CLOSING FOR SPORTIVES

When people speak of sportives these days, they can often be heard asking each other ‘What route are you doing?’ or ‘I was hoping to do the 100km but now I think I’ll just opt for the 50km!’ Well that certainly isn’t the case for the upcoming Carrick Wheelers Challenge Sportive, which comprises of 1 Route, 8 Challenges and 160km of the toughest roads around the famous cycling town of Carrick-on-Suir. The route which was designed by An Post Rás legend, the late Bobby Power, covers a combination of the hardest established climbs in the area including Mahon Falls and Seskin Hill, as well as the ascent of the famous Tipperary mountain of Slievenamon, before a finishing challenge on a ‘road’ through Lord Waterford’s beautiful Curraghmore Estate, that is a combination of the Strada Bianca of Italy and the cobbles of Paris-Roubaix!

This indeed is no family fun cycle and is aimed at serious cyclists with the mentality for the serious challenge that has earned the title of Ireland’s Toughest Sportive.

The route contains two food stops, the first being the principal tea stop will be situated just past the halfway mark, in the Rathgormuck Hiking Centre located at the foothills of the picturesque Comeragh Mountains, with a second water stop being located at around the 130km mark, manned by local Munster Time Trial Champion Hugh Mulhearne!

The closing date for entries is this Sunday 20th May 2012, in order to facilitate the ordering of the specially commissioned t-shirt for each entrant. This year’s t-shirt will have a slight variation on last year’s well received version in that they will adopt the event founders name into the title (Bobby Power’s Carrick Wheelers Challenge Sportive) as well as a colour change, taking on the pink of the famous Maglia Rosa of the Giro D’Italia, as the route was inspired by the infamous white roads of the 2010 event. Participates were very pleased with the design and quality of last year’s shirts, made from the more expensive ‘dri-fit’ material which they made great use of for both leisure and training activities in the following months.

So are you fit enough, strong enough and determined enough to complete this monumental challenge? Well if you are, check out the Carrick Wheelers website before this Sunday 20th May 2012 and get your entry in for Ireland’s Toughest Sportive.

WICKLOW 200 is also CLOSING.

Regarded as the leader of the pack, the Wicklow 200 have led the way for many years. Now they like all spotifs have that particular place in the annals. YES, I took part in the event which was the ground breaker, but because of the work load attached to running and fine tuning an event, the organisers have to call time and reluctantly the cut off date is FRIDAY the 19th of MAY.
