The Tour of Ulster, the premier cycle stage race in the province, will take place on Bank Holiday May weekend, Saturday 1st May - Monday 3rd May 2010 in County Tyrone.

The race will follow its usual format, 4 stages over 3 days based in the Dungannon area. With the time trial in Dungannon Park, and the race covering most of the scenic routes in the area.

With the announcement of Dungannon & South Tyrone Borough Council as the new main sponsor. Dungannon & South Tyrone Borough Council is delighted to be involved in presenting this prestigious event.

Borough Council Mayor, Councillor Robert Mulligan, speaking at Thursday’s launch in Dungannon Leisure Centre said, “I am privileged to be here today to launch the Tour of Ulster 2010. The Council is pleased to sponsor this challenging event. This cycling tour which encompasses a wide area of South Tyrone and Mid Ulster including a circuit of Lough Neagh over 3 days, raises many challenges and will be a severe test of stamina for the competitors. I take off my hat to you all and wish you all a successful few days.”

Garry Nugent from Coalisland who has taken over the role of Race Organiser from Michael Murray, speaking about the challenges he faces in his new role Garry said, “This year’s route on paper looks extremely difficult and will developing into a good race. We have just confirmed the entry of the former top European Pro Malcolm Elliot and his team Motorpoint, I am extremely grateful for the support we have received from Dungannon and South Tyrone Borough Council”.

While the event will be based around the Dungannon Council area, the various stages will take the cyclists through large areas of Tyrone, including Ballygawley and Fivemiletown, and a stage around Lough Neagh will take the race as far as Antrim and Crumlin. One critical stage to be run off in Dungannon itself will be the short time trial where the top cyclists will have their best opportunity of gaining a few seconds over their nearest rivals. Over the three days of racing, the Tour of Ulster cyclists will race approximately 255 miles.

The winner of last year’s event was Banbridge’s Sean Downey at only 18 years old with second place going to Lurgan’s Thomas Martin and third place Dublin’s Ciaran

Cassidy. Most of the top Irish riders are expected to make up the expected field of around 100 cyclists.

In addition to the Dungannon & South Tyrone Borough Council being main sponsors, the race has also attracted support from Seriously Strong Cheddar who is sponsoring the Under 23 jersey and Gallen Vehicle Hire, Xtreme Cycles and Seamus Devlin.
