Ireland’s Nicolas Roche showed excellent form as the Tour de France draws closer, finishing towards the fore on today’s second stage of the Tour de Suisse. The Ag2r La Mondiale rider placed sixth on the first mountain stage to Verbier, riding in a well judged manner on the final climb and crossing the line sixteen seconds behind the winner Rui Costa (Movistar).

Luxembourg’s Frank Schleck (RadioShack Nissan) was second with the Basque rider Mikel Nieve (Euskaltel Euskadi).

Overnight leader Peter Sagan (Liquigas Cannondale) cracked on the foothills of the climb and finished far back, losing his yellow jersey. Portuguese rider Costa took over at the top of the general classification, with Roche’s solid 25th place in yesterday’s opening time trial and excellent performance today seeing him finish the day fifth.

He is 21 seconds behind this evening, and has had a substantial boost to his morale. Prior to the race he said that his goal was to finish in the top ten overall, and so he has started that campaign well.

The Tour de Suisse continues tomorrow with a 194.7 kilometre stage from Martigny to Aarberg.

Meanwhile Roche’s first cousin Dan Martin continue to show signs of improvement after his big crash earlier in the Critérium du Dauphiné in France. He has been below par due to his injuries but finished a respectable 31st on today’s stage, 38 seconds behind the winner Dani Moreno (Katusha).

British rider Bradley Wiggins and his Sky Procycling team covered all the dangerous moves, ensuring that he took the overall classification for the second year running. Team-mate Michael Rogers was second, one minute 17 seconds behind, while Tour de France champion Cadel Evans (BMC Racing team) was a further nine seconds back in third.

Martin was using the race to build form for what he hoped will be his debut Tour de France. While he didn’t perform as he had expected due to his accident, he will keep his fingers crossed that the Garmin Barracuda team management show faith and give him the nod.
