Ireland’s Philip Deignan and Nicolas Roche finished in the main bunch on yesterday’s penultimate stage of the Tour of Beijing, rolling across the line in Shunyi Olympic Rowing and Canoeing Centre 70th and 87th respectively.

After Friday’s superb showing where they took first and second on the stage, neither went for the sprint yesterday. First to the line was the Italian rider Elia Viviani (Liquigas-Cannondale), who beat his team-mate Peter Sagan and Juan Jose Haedo (Saxo Bank SunGard) in the battle for the win.

“It is very good for me. It is my only second season as a pro,” said Viviani after his triumph. “I am young and I can now hope for the sprints next season in the big races. It was a very fast sprint at the end of a very long stage. The team was fantastic for me.”

The big gallop took place after a long distance break of Julien Berard (AG2R La Mondiale), Frederik Veuchelen (Vacansoleil-DCM), Iljo Keisse (Quick Step), Tiago Machado (RadioShack), Damiano Cunego (Lampre-ISD) and Wang Meiyin (China) were caught inside the final ten kilometres. They built a lead of over five minutes but the peloton chased hard to bring them back in time.

Overnight leader Tony Martin (HTC Highroad) was also in this main bunch and retains his comfortable 17 second lead over closest challenger David Millar (Garmin-Cervélo). Roche stays 11th overall, while Deignan is 31st.

Today’s final stage takes the riders 118 kilometres from Tian An Men Square to Bird's Nest Olympic Stadium.
