Nicolas Roche succeeded in his goal of taking a top ten overall finish in the Tour de Suisse, going from thirteenth to tenth overall on today’s final stage of the race. The Ag2r La Mondiale competitor rode strongly on the final stage to the summit finish of Arosa, getting across to a select group of favourites on the penultimate climb then, after they were caught, jumping away from the group close to the end of the stage in a bid to gain time.

While he was brought back, he still finished a solid fourteenth to the line in Sörenberg. He was alongside the main favourites at the finish, and moved up the general classification as a result.

Estonian rider Tanel Kangert (Pro Team Astana) grabbed stage honours, beating Jérémy Roy (FDJ-Big Mat) by two seconds. Rui Costa (Movistar) hung on to the yellow jersey and won the biggest race of his career. Roche was a superb tenth, one minute 52 seconds back.

The race is his final competitive event prior to heading back to Ireland this coming week and taking part in the time trial and road race at the national road championships in Clonmel. After that, Roche will lead the Ag2r la Mondiale team in the Tour de France. On the basis of his performances in Switzerland, he can expect a good showing in both the championships and the Tour itself.
