Irish pros Nicolas Roche and Philip Deignan completed the Tour of Beijing today, racing in as part of the main bunch and both sealing good overall performances in the race. The duo finished in the same time as the sprint winner Denis Galimzyanov (Katusha Team), who beat Juan José Haedo (Saxo Bank Sungard) and Elia Viviani (Liquigas-Cannondale) to the line at the Bird’s Nest Olympic Stadium.

The 118 kilometre stage from Tiananmen square saw three riders away for much of the distance, namely Alexandr Pliushin (Katusha), Francesco Reda (Quick Step) and Liewe Westra (Vacansoleil). They buit a lead of over three minutes but were hauled back on the final two laps of the finishing circuit. Neither of the two Irish riders sprinted in the gallop to the line, with Roche rolling in 49th and Deignan placing 56th.

Galimzyanov cemented his grip on his green points jersey with the win, and was very satisfied afterwards. “Of course I am very, very happy because this is my first victory on the ProTour [WorldTour],” he said. “I needed the team to bring me to the last kilometre in a good position and they did it.

“I am happy about the jersey of course, but I am happier about the stage. For me it is much more important. I am in good condition and I did my job but today was my last race for the season and to win the race is amazing.”

Roche ended the five day WorldTour race 48 seconds behind the overall winner Tony Martin, taking an excellent eleventh place overall. Deignan was 20 seconds further back in a very solid 31st.

They were first and second respectively on Friday’s third stage, fighting out for the win on what was a superb day for Irish cycling. Roche was also fourth in the mountains classification.
