Irish pros Nicolas Roche and Philip Deignan will today begin a three day push up the general classification in the Amgen Tour of California, with the stage five time trial and two mountain stages set to determine the final overall standings in the race.
Both riders are forty seconds behind the race leader Peter Sagan (Liquigas Cannondale), who has built the entirety of his advantage over they and other GC contenders by taking victories in the first four stages.
His staggering run continued yesterday when he blasted home ahead of Heinrich Haussler (Garmin Barracuda) and Michael Matthews (Rabobank) plus the rest of the field. Roche was 19th and Deignan 60th, both finishing in the same time.
Sagan holds a sixteen second lead over Haussler heading into the time trial, which covers 29.7 kilometres in Bakersfield. Roche and Deignan are 31st and 42nd and while neither are specialists against the clock, their good form plus climbing ability suggest they could progress up the GC on tomorrow’s leg to Big Bear lake and Saturday’s race to the top of Mount Baldy.
The race concludes on Sunday in Los Angeles but due to the likelihood of a bunch sprint, no major chances are expected then.
