Ryan Mullen in action today |
Ryan Mullen had a very solid showing in the junior men’s world championship time trial today, finishing sixteenth out of the 54 starters in the race.
The Irishman covered the 27.8 kilometre distance in a time one minute 31 seconds off that set by the gold medallist Mads Wurtz Schmidt (Denmark).
Schmidt was four seconds quicker than the Kiwi rider James Oram, who was the early leader. Australian rider David Edwards rode very strongly early on and looked like he might depose Schmidt, but then faded towards end. He hung on for third, 21 seconds back.
“My intention was to do the best race of my life, to do my best time trial I could do and just see what the result would be,” said the gold medallist afterwards.
He was quickest at each of the time splits. Mullen was 14th at the first, up to 13th at the halfway point, then slowed slightly towards the end to take sixteenth.
Having less international experience than many of his rivals in the race, he can take satisfaction from a very respectable showing in the event. Mullen will also line out in Saturday morning’s road race, where Ireland’s Jack Wilson will also compete.
The Elite women’s time trial takes place this afternoon, with the Elite men going tomorrow. Ireland has no entrant in the former, but national champion Matt Brammeier and David McCann will both compete in the latter.
The road race events begin on Friday.
