Boosting his chances of Olympic qualification, Martyn Irvine finished an excellent fifth overall out of 24 starters in the Omnium event at the Cali track World Cup in Colombia yesterday. The 26 year old had been sixth in the standings heading into yesterday’s final three events, and improved his position by one place through three solid rides.

Irvine clocked a time of four minutes 29.382 seconds to net eighth in the individual pursuit, just over five seconds off the fastest time set by Colombian rider Juan Esteban Arango.

He then placed seventh in the scratch race. Five riders succeeded in gaining a lap on the rest of the field, and from these Walter Fernando Perez (Argentina) triumphed in finishing ahead of Gijs Van Hoecke (Belgium). Irvine was second-best of those a lap down, netting that seventh place.

The omnium concluded with a one kilometre time trial. Esteban Arango delighted the home crowd with a fine time of one minute 2.685 seconds, which edged out Bryan Coquard (France) by just 0.021 seconds. Irvine covered the distance in one minute 4.205, taking eighth.

That left him with a total of 52 points in the competition, sealing his fifth place behind Esteban Arango, Zach Bell (Canada), Coquard and Recep Unalan (Turkey).

He is now eleventh in the World Cup standings and, by Cycling Ireland’s estimation, has improved Ireland to ninth in the European table for National Olympic Committees. The top eight will qualify for London, and so Irvine needs to keep the pressure on in the three remaining qualification events. They are the World Cup races in Beijing and London, plus the world championships in Melbourne in April.

Meanwhile Caroline Ryan is now an excellent seventh in the women’s individual pursuit standings, having placed seventh in yesterday’s race. Ciara Horne was eleventh (see below for details)

2/12/11 RYAN SEVENTH IN PURSUIT AT TRACK WORLD CUP

Caroline Ryan took a strong seventh place in the women’s individual pursuit at the Cali World Cup today, covering the 3,000 metre distance in a time of three minutes 40.081 seconds. This was just over seven seconds off the fastest qualifying time of Alison Shanks (New Zealand), and two and a half seconds faster than fellow Irishwoman Ciara Horne, who was a solid eleventh.

She spoke about her ride afterwards via her Facebook page, saying that the performance had qualified a place for Ireland in the track world championships.

Meanwhile Martyn Irvine placed eighth in the individual pursuit held as part of the omnium competition. He clocked a clocked a time of four minutes 29.382 seconds, with the fastest mark being set by Juan Esteban Arango. The Colombian beat Carlos Linarez (Venezuela) with his four minutes 23.752 seconds pace.

The result left Irvine sitting seventh overall heading towards the final two events. He’s just one point off sixth place, and will push hard in the remaining scratch race – which he won in the European championships – and the kilometre time trial.

Irvine got things off to a strong start on Thursday when he was third in the qualifying event, then placed seventh in the flying lap, ninth in the points race and fourteenth in the elimination. That left him sixth at the end of yesterday.

He is aiming to qualify for the London Olympics, and needs to take as many points as possible in Cali.
