IRISH RIDERS GET WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP CAMPAIGN UNDERWAY TODAY

Ireland’s campaign at the world road race championships in Copenhagen, Denmark, begins today with two Irish riders participating in the one of the early events.

The country has no entrant in the junior women’s time trial which starts things off, but Felix English and Sean Downey will compete in the Under 23 men’s time trial, which takes place over two laps of a 17.6 kilometre circuit. It will run between 1pm and 5.30pm European time.

English was part of the nine man lineup originally announced earlier this month, but national champion Downey subsequently appealed and was given the green light last week by Irish selectors. Multiple Irish champion Siobhan Horgan also successfully contested her non-selection, and will compete in next Saturday’s road race.

Before then, Sam Bennett, Philip Lavery and Felix English will ride in Friday’s 168 kilometre road race for under 23 men. On Saturday morning, Jack Wilson and Ryan Mullen will represent the country in the junior road race.

Of course Ireland’s pro riders will also take part in the Copenhagen events. National champion Matt Brammeier and David McCann will compete in Wednesday’s Elite time trial, then one of those will join Nicolas Roche and Daniel Martin in Sunday’s road race.

Roche showed good form yesterday when he took eighth in the GP di Prato in Italy.

Brammeier completed his preparations in the eight-day Tour of Britain, which ended yesterday. He rode in support of his HTC Highroad team-mates rather than being able to chase his own results, but compatriot Ronan McLaughlin had a strong ride on yesterday’s final stage in London. He was away for almost all of the 88.8 kilometre distance, being caught by the bunch inside the final ten kilometres.

His An Post Grant Thornton M. Donnelly Sean Kelly team had a superb showing in the race, with the Lithuanian Gediminas Bagdonas winning Saturday’s stage.

The Belgian rider Pieter Ghyllebert also dominated the intermediate sprints classification. The team took four out of the top six places in that competition, with McLaughlin’s final day effort securing him third.
