IRISH RIDERS AWARDED THREE PLACES IN MEN’S OLYMPIC ROAD RACE

Cycling’s governing body the UCI today confirmed the allocation of places for the men’s Olympic road events. Ireland has been awarded three starters in the road race and one in the time trial; the maximum allocation given to higher-ranking countries such as Spain, Australia, and Great Britain are five and two, respectively.
Given that Ireland finished up a fine thirteenth in the final WorldTour rankings for 2011, it had been thought that four places would be allocated. However just three Irish riders have world ranking points and this is believed to have been the limiting factor.
Daniel Martin, Nicolas Roche and Philip Deignan are the three riders in question.

The UCI has also stated that any places not taken up by the National Olympic Committees will be redistributed between March and April next year, thus giving some countries the chance to have more riders.
The women’s road places will be allocated on May 31st 2012.
