IRISH RIDERS AFFECTED BY BACK LUCK AT ASTANA WORLD CUP

There was no luck for Irish riders Martyn Irvine and Caroline Ryan in the first round of cycling’s track World Cup in Astana, Kazakhstan, with both seeing their chances affected by misfortune.

Irvine had finished a fine fifth in the recent European Omnium championships in the Netherlands but was disqualified from the competition in the third round when he didn’t withdraw soon enough after being eliminated from the elimination race. The contest features many sprints and the last rider over the line on each occasion must pull out.

Irvine didn’t realise he was eliminated and appealed what was a very harsh decision. However the race judges didn’t relent, thus preventing him from continuing in the competition on Saturday.

Meanwhile Ryan crashed hard in the third round of the women’s Omnium, also the elimination event, and was brought to hospital for treatment. She was unable to start yesterday’s concluding rounds, but is expected to make a full recovery.

David O’Loughlin finished twelfth in the individual pursuit, matching his placing in Friday’s scratch race. He clocked a time of 4 minutes 32.296 seconds, just over ten seconds off the quickest time of the Australian Glenn O’Shea.
