IRISH CHAMPION MATT BRAMMEIER SIGNS ONE YEAR DEAL WITH OMEGA PHARMA-QUICK STEP

Irish national champion Matt Brammeier will compete with the Omega Pharma Quick Step team in 2012, assuaging fears that he could be left with a smaller squad after the winding down of his HTC Highroad team.

The road race and time trial title holder was always set to get a new squad after what has been a solid first season at WorldTour level, but with the market flooded with riders after the collapse of HTC Highroad plus the merging of the RadioShack and Leopard Trek teams, it remained to be seen if he could get a deal with a team of a similar level.

Fortunately he has secured a good one year contract and will compete alongside several of his current team-mates from this year, including world championship time trial favourite Tony Martin and the Velits brothers. They are also moving across from the HTC Highroad team.

Apart from his rare national championship double, Brammeier finished second on a stage of the Tour of Austria and was tenth in the Tour of Qatar prologue. He also did good work for the team sprinters, including his friend Mark Cavendish.

“Brammeier is a rider the team wants to bet on for the near future,” said general manager Patrick Lefevere. “We're sure he has everything it takes to cut out a role for himself, first within the team and then during the season in the races for which he'll line up.

“Matthew is entering an important phase in his career and we think he can even improve in our group.”
