Ireland’s Martyn Irvine continues to show strong progress in track racing, posting a supberb performance in winning one of the six races making up the omnium contest at the European championships in Apeldoorn. He finished fifth overall in the final classification of the event.

Irvine was eighth in each of the first three events yesterday, namely the flying lap, points race and elimination race. That put him ninth overall at the start of today, and he improved on that with a stronger set of performances.

He was sixth in today’s individual pursuit, clocking four minutes 32.542, then pulled out one of the best rides of his career in the afternoon scratch race. Irvine broke clear during the 15 kilometre event, and was the only rider to succeed in lapping the field.

He finished first ahead of Volodymyr Diudia (Ukraine) and Lasse Norman Hansen (Denmark), and moved up to second in the overall standings.

He was then eighth in the concluding one kilometre time trial, clocking 1 minute 4.697 to winner Ed Clancy’s 1 minute 2.304.

Irvine’s final tally of 39 points put him fifth overall behind Clancy, just four points off the bronze medal total. Bryan Coquard (France) and Elia Viviani (Italy) were second and third. The Irishman is determined to make a strong push for Olympic qualification, and is clearly progressing well on the track.

In other events, Caroline Ryan finished 13th in the women’s omnium. She was twelfth in the flying lap, thirteenth in the points race, twelfth in the elimination race, seventh in the individual pursuit, seventeenth in the scratch race and twelfth in the elimination race.

On Friday she, Ciaran Horne and Sinead Jennings were a solid seventh in the women’s team pursuit. David O’Loughlin finished fourteenth in the men’s points race, which also took place the same day.
