Irish under 23 time trial champion Sean Downey was best placed of the country’s two riders in the equivalent event at the world road race championships in Copenhagen.
The Ulster rider covered the 35.2 kilometre course in a time two minutes and 52 seconds off that of the winner Luke Durbridge (Australia), netting 25th.
Compatriot Felix English was one minute 44 seconds further back in 52nd place. He said afterwards that he was disappointed not to go better, feeling he is tired from a long season, but the rider is still just 18 years of age and has many seasons of Under 23 racing ahead of him.
He will next line out in the under 23 road race on Friday, joining up with Sam Bennett and Philip Lavery there. Downey is not riding the race.
Today’s event was the first in the Irish campaign at the world championships. Next up is Ryan Mullen, who will compete in the junior men’s time trial tomorrow.
Professionals Matt Brammeier and David McCann will then line out in the Elite TT on Wednesday.
The road races will begin on Friday.
