Following a very heavy crash on yesterday’s stage of the Critérium du Dauphiné, Daniel Martin and his Garmin Barracuda team have decided that he will continue in the race today.
The team indicated yesterday that he would undergo an examination this morning, and that his ongoing participation would depend on the conclusions of that. He’s now been given a green light, and while he is likely to be very stiff today, will continue in what is an important event for him.
Martin is aiming to make his Tour de France debut this year. His team had indicated in recent weeks that he was likely to be given a place on the squad for the race, but being forced to pull out of the Critérium du Dauphiné would have impacted on his preparation and, most likely, on his chances of being selected.
The delay caused by his crash plus his injuries meant that he finished sixteen minutes 39 seconds back yesterday, placing 172nd. He is in the same position overall starting today’s stage.
British rider Bradley Wiggins (Sky Procycling) is one second ahead of yesterday’s stage winner Cadel Evans (BMC Racing Team) in the overall standings.
