Mark Nestor will tomorrow lead a strong junior squad in the Martyn Ashfield Classic road race in Wales, the first round of the Peter Buckley series. Maurice O’Brien, Eoin White and Marcus Treacy complete the Hibernian Team Ireland squad for the 70 mile event.

Team manager Tom Keenan said that while it was hard to judge form given that this is the first international assignment of the year, he was hopeful of a good result. ‘I think the lads should do well in the race. Mark Nestor will go into it as the leader of the team, he’s been going very well lately.’

Nestor was the dominant winner of the Des Hanlon Memorial junior contest in Carlow two weeks ago. White, Treacy and O’Brien were second, third and fourth in the event, which was acting as a selection race for tomorrow’s Martyn Ashfield Classic.

Keenan has also outlined the selection criteria for the events on the junior international programme. They are as follows:

- Peter Buckley series round 2, April 18th: First two riders on stage one of Gorey three day, plus the first two on stage four. If one or both of the riders are the same then GC will be used to select the rest of the team.

- Peter Buckley series round 3, April 25th: The two best-placed riders in the series, plus two others as selected at the manager’s discretion. This will depend on factors such as the type of course.

- Peter Buckley series round 4, May 16th: The two best-placed riders in the series plus the first two riders in the general classification of the Corkman Three Day. If one or both are the same the next place(s) will go to the next rider(s) on GC.

- Peter Buckley series round 5 (stage race) 3rd & 4th July. The best placed rider in the series, the first in GC at the Dunboyne Three Day and the first junior in the trial. If there is any overlap it will go to the next rider on GC/in the TT. The fourth rider will be at the manager’s discretion, depending on the type of course, etc.

- The Junior Tour of Ireland, August 3rd – 8th: The two best-placed riders in the Peter Buckley series plus the first rider in the national junior road race (if this rider is not one of the other two). The fourth rider will be at the manager’s discretion, depending on the type of course, etc.

- Peter Buckley series round 6, Junior Tour of Wales (August 28th – 30th): The two best placed riders in the series, the best rider on GC in the Junior Tour of Ireland. The fourth rider will be at the manager’s discretion, depending on the type of course, etc.

- Peter Buckley series round 7, September 5th: The two best-placed riders in the series. The remaining two paces will be at the manager’s discretion, depending on the type of course, etc.

- The World Championships (proving a team is attending). The two best-placed riders in the Peter Buckley series. The remaining two paces will be at the manager’s discretion, depending on the type of course, etc.
