NATIONAL TEAM ANNOUNCED FOR TQ PAPERS 2 DAY

A six woman Irish team mixing experience and youth will line out in the TQ Papers 2 day this September, with possible participation in the world championships in Verona to follow. National champion Julie O’Hagan, Louise Moriarty, Siobhan Dervan and Colette Swift will be the backbone of the strong squad, with junior riders Mary Brennan and Erin Turlington joining the other four in the three-stage international race.

According to Mick Usher of the women’s commission, Brennan and Turlington should benefit greatly from the race. ‘There is a chance that the two girls may take part in the world junior championships, although that is yet to be finalised by Cycling Ireland. The idea of putting them in the team for the TQ is to expose them to racing at that level – they would probably learn more in the two days there than they would otherwise learn over months. The senior riders think it is a good idea for the two girls.’

Usher says that there may also be a women’s senior team going to Verona. ‘Again, it is not certain yet but we can enter one girl for the road race and two for the time trial. There wouldn’t be an overlap – the one who does the road race will not double up for the TT. The national time trial championships in Killorglin will be the decider for the women, with the first two there to be considered for Verona. The requirement would be that they would have to complete the test within a certain percentage of the male winner’s time – we would need to include this yardstick in order to ensure that their standard is sufficiently high.’

Brennan and Turlington are currently racing as part of the Team Ireland setup in Belgium. Swift will be riding the Trophée d'Or Féminin in France from August 21st – 25th while Moriarty will be competing in the Tour of Holland from the 30th of this month until September 4th.

The 2004 TQ Paper International 2 Day will take place on Saturday 18th and Sunday 19th of September.
