Four riders from the Hibernian Team Ireland squad which rode strongly in the recent Tour de Langkawi have been selected to take part in the Giro del Capo in South Africa, which runs from March 9th to 13th.

David McCann, Eugene Moriarty, David O’Loughlin and Paul Griffin will line out with Kieran McMahon for the 2.5 ranked race. Their invite came on the back of the strong ride in Malaysia, where the team took two places in the top twenty overall plus several top-ten stage finishes.

‘This invitation came as a result of the success of Hibernian Team Ireland in the Telecom Malaysia Tour de Langkawi’, said Olympic manager Martin O’Loughlin today. ‘We did not have a budget for this race, so the riders volunteered to pay for their own flights. Four of the team performed exceptionally in Malaysia, while Kieran MacMahon has been flying in training. They are obviously in good form and want to use it to maximise their chances of Olympic selection. They have to be admired for that.’

The team will be assisted by South African officials at the event.

O’Loughlin also disclosed a change to the Team Ireland race programme today. ‘We have decided not to race in Belgium in the two races on March 14th and 28th. A replacement race for the latter event will be included in our race programme for June', he said.
