MCCANN SOLID 25TH ON STAGE TWO

Following yesterday’s disappointment at missing the crucial selections in strong crosswinds, today’s second stage saw a solid 25th place finish by David McCann in the Giro Del Capo in South Africa.

McCann in the recent Tour de Langkawi

Together with Hibernian Team Ireland team-mates David O’Loughlin and Paul Griffin, McCann made the important split in the early part of the 9 lap, 131.4 kilometre stage. He made it into another crucial selection closer to the finish in Stellenbosch and ended the race as part of a 24 man group sprinting for third place on the stage.

The day’s honours went to David Kopp (Lamonta), who will be known to some Irish riders due to his ride in the FBD Milk Rás several years ago. Kopp reaching the line eleven seconds clear of Roberto Lochowski (Wiesenhof Leipzig) and a further one minute and two seconds ahead of McCann’s group.

Paul Griffin was 45th, 2 minutes and 46 seconds back, O’Loughlin 52nd at 4 minutes 32, and Eugene Moriarty 58th, 6 minutes and 50 seconds down. Kieran McMahon finished 79th, 23 minutes and 25 seconds after Kopp.

In the overall standings, Team Barloworld riders Tiaan Kannemeyer and David George remain well clear of the rest of the field. O’Loughlin continues to be the best of the Irish, now 36th, while McCann is 45th overall. Griffin (51st), Moriarty (72nd) and McMahon (83rd) are further back.

Stage 1:
TOUGH DAY FOR IRISH IN GIRO DEL CAPO

Gale force winds made the opening stage of the Cape Argus Pick ‘n Pay Giro del Capo in South Africa a tough and ultimately unrewarding one for the Hibernian Ireland team, with David O’Loughlin best placed of the riders in 36th position. The Mayo rider finished 8 minutes and 20 seconds down on winner Tiaan Kannemeyer, the Team Barloworld pro crossing the line beside his team-mate David George at the end of the first stage.

The duo had been part of a seven man group which profited from strong crosswinds in going clear after just 22 kilometres. This lead grew to a maximum of four and a half minutes before what was left of the fragmented peloton started to reel it back. Sensing it was the right time to make their move, the Team Barloworld riders forged clear of the other five and eventually crossed the line 1 minute and 51 seconds ahead of third-placed Lubor Tesar (e’D System-Zvyz).

O’Loughlin was 36th, while David McCann (48th), Paul Griffin (51st), Eugene Moriarty (79) and Kieran McMahon (80) were further in arrears. Moriarty and McMahon had both punctured early in the stage and never got back on terms.

Tomorrow’s 131 kilometre second stage starts and ends in Stellenbosch. It takes in the dreaded climb of Hell’s Hoogte Pass.
