Pre-race favourite Nicolas Roche scooped his first Elite national title yesterday evening when he won the time trial championships in Dungarvan. The Crédit Agricole rider covered the distance in a time of 44 minutes 7.3 seconds, beating previous champions David McCann (Colavita/Sutter Home) and David O’Loughlin (Navigators Insurance) by 12 and 33 seconds respectively.

Paul Healion (Murphy And Gunn/Newlyn Group/M. Donnelly Sean Kelly), Neil Delahaye (Usher IRC) and Simon Coughlan (Danaman Dynamos) were all over two minutes back, completing the top six.

The Under 23 victory went to Paul Brady (Emyvale). He was over a minute and a half quicker than Michael Murray (Linen Green), with Martyn Irvine (Ards CC) taking bronze.

The closest race of the night was between the women. Louise Moriarty (Global Racing/Winning Solutions) beat Jenny Fay (Rapha Condor) by five seconds to win, while Heather Wilson (Maryland) was a further two seconds back in third.

Ivan Robinson (Ards CC) got the better of Gordon Scott (East Antrim) and Lloyd Berry (Orwell Dundrum Town Centre) in the veterans’ race. Sean Downey (Banbridge CC) proved quicker than Denis Dunworth and Thomas Martin (Clan Eireann) in the junior event, and the pairing of Crother/McMinn (Ards CC) beat Fitzgerald/Lynch (Tandem Cycling) and Ruddel/McCann (Ards CC) in the tandem contest.

The 2007 Irish championships continue today in Carrick on Suir with the running of the women’s and veteran’s road race titles. Tomorrow sees the action move to Waterford, where the Elite/Under 23 event and the junior road race will be run off.
