Over 100 cyclists went to sign on for the Service Matters Grand Prix in Castlecoote on Sunday. There was racing for all categories from Senior to under 16 and racing teams came from all over the country to participate. The A1 and A2 categories went off together to race the 7 laps of the 10 mile circuit from Castlecoote village, through Donamon wood, Creggs and back to Castlecoote.
On the second lap, a breakaway group of seven riders had formed. This group had some very strong riders including one former winner; Castlebar man David Brennan, former Irish Junior RR champion Charles Prendergast and ten times RAS rider, Padraig Marry. This group stayed away for two more laps and looked like they would go to the finish. The Stamullen team however, started to chase using two men working at a time and the gap began to close. With a lap to go the race was altogether. Two riders jumped away with 7 miles to go and in the last mile, Colin Robinson made his move and crossed the line alone to take the prize.
The 50 mile A3 Junior race was won by a delighted Ciaran Campbell, Drogheda Wheelers. Two brothers Pat and Keith O’Connell, Covey Wheelers, Westport came 1st and 2nd in the 40 mile A4 race. The Donamon Dynamos had a victory in the u-16 race thanks to Roscommon student, Dara Bailey, who is still progressing after his win earlier in the season at the RAS Na NÓg in Drogheda.
Donamon Dynamos CC wishes to thank the Civil Defence Ambulance Service, Motor Cycle Marshals, Cattigans Pub, the Garda and local residents for their support. Special thanks to Pat Moss, Commissarie who did an excellent job at short notice.
Donamon Dynamos in conjunction with Roscommon Sports Partnership are holding a 50K Leisure Cycle on Sunday June 24th, leaving the square Roscommon at 9am.
