The sun guaranteed a warm day of racing for Round 2 of the Cycling Ireland National Cross-Country (XC) Series in Killarney Co. Kerry on Sunday 22nd May.

Killarney Cycling Club hosted an excellent event in the grounds of the Killarney Youth Hostel site, with over 150 competitors racing on the day.

Caoimhe May maintained her form from Round 1 in Newtownards, again finishing first in the Senior 1 women’s race, and Chris McGlinchey, who was absent from Round 1, took a commanding victory in the Senior 1 men’s race.

The XC format, with scalable loops for the various age and ability groups, offers riders from under 6 all the way up to any age the opportunity to take part, and there were excellent numbers across the categories again in Killarney.

The course featured a longer individual loop than Round 1, with fewer repetitions. The consensus from those taking part was that it was an enjoyable and challenging course, made all the more difficult by the heat on the day.

Victories in the end went to Adam Murphy in the Junior category, Mark McGlynn and Annie Roche won their Senior 2 categories, Emmet Brien and Tara Brennan were first in the Senior 3 groups, and Frank Doherty lead the Senior 4.

There was another excellent turn out for the younger categories racing in Killarney, including a great race for the Under 6s. The winners were Benjamin Cunningham and Ríonach Campbell in the Under 8s, Rían Watkins and Aoife Campbell in the Under 10s, Eunan Campbell and Aoife Craig in the Under 12s, Curtis McKee and Cara Suckling un the Under 14s, and Conor Murphy and Greta Lawless in the Under 16s.

Next up in the National Series calendar is Union Wood on Sunday 5th June, to be hosted by Northwest MTB.
