By Derick Whyte / Aidan Crowley

In planning for 6 months between Derick Whyte and Aidan Crowley and the fantastic Midleton Cycling and Tri Club members, the 2nd ‘Stephen Roche Tour De Cure” in association with MyHome.ie for 2010 finally kicked off last Friday Evening at the fabulous Radisson Blu Hotel outside Midleton for the inaugural ‘Tour De Cure Gala Dinner’ evening after 150 tickets were sold. Guests enjoyed a fantastic meal along with interviews from John Kelly (former Irish and Munster Rugby Star), Lisa Cummins (first Irish swimmer to swim the channel), Donal Og Cusack (best seller sports book author and Cork GAA player) along with Stephen Roche and Corks very own and most probable London Triathlon Olympian 2012 Bryan Keane. The evening went late into the night and early morning.

Stephen Roche, Mark Cunningham (winner of the first UnoVelo in Ireland) and Scott Gerrie (Unovelo CEO)

At 5.30am, on Saturday, the organising team arrived on site and just made sure, that everything set up was laid out in style in order for what was to happen. In total over 1300 riders turned up to ride on the day with the 160km and 100km routes taking 1,000 of these. We only expected 1000 as when pre-entry closed, this was the final number but registering on the day took us over 1300. It looks like the 2009 50km riders really trained for the past 12mths as most told the organisers they did the shorter ride last year but were determined to take on the longer challenge at the weekend of 100km which was fantastic to see. The 100km was the most popular route.

Scott presenting Stephen on the Friday his Unovelo
Stephen Roche was presented with his UNOVELO SLS1017 Road Bike for the event by Scott Gerrie (Owner of www.UNOVELO.com who flew from Canada to be at event) at the Gala Dinner and so the Tour De Cure and Stephen, launched the UNOVELO brand in the Irish Cycling Circles at the event. (ask your local stockist for details). All who raised 150euro for the charities via sponsorship were included in the draw after the event as Scott decided to leave the Tour De Cure the bike afterwards when Stephen was finished with it. Mark Cunningham from Bishopstown, Cork who rode the 50km Route after just taking up cycling came out first from the draw and so won the fantastic Bike. The Event Directors have received both positive and negative comments from the event and all will be taken on board for next year, we are determined that the Food Stops next year will be filled for double the riders entered but we have a feeling that alot more cyclists visited these stops last weekend than what were in the event. Ways will be implemented next year to resolve this.

Ignacio Peregrina (General Manager of the Jameson Experience) presenting Stephen with his own labelled 12 Yr old Very Rare.
The event was pleased that the famous Jameson Distillery, located in Midleton presented Stephen with his own labelled 12yr old ‘Very Rare’ whiskey afterwards and have already confirmed sponsorship for 2011 with the organisers. The majority of the riders got home safely all wearing the smiles they left with, albeit, a little tired. The event jersey specifically designed for us by SPIN 11 (www.base.ie) and the event bottles delivered to us by www.cycleways.com along with produce from www.zipvitsport.com went down really well with all participants. Special thanks go to our 3 main sponsors, MyHome.ie , Corks Sports Partnership and Johnson & Johnson. Other thanks go to AN ROTHAR Bike Shop in Midleton and Kilgrew Cycles in Cork City who provided on the course bike repair and maintenance.

For 2011, we have learnt that we may not take registration on the day, we need to look for and require a minimum standard of bike and of course, we will resolve finally the intermediate Food Stops along the 4 courses on offer.

Stacy Kelly (Sean Kelly’s daughter helping our event meeting Stephen Roche (who was better, Sean or Stephen?)

The good news is that even after such short time after the event with money still coming into us, the Stephen Roche Tour De Cure in association with myhome.ie will surpass last years money total raised, now heading for 50,000euro to be shared out between the 3 fantastic charities who do great work in the community, the Mercy Hospital Cancer Foundation, the Cope Foundation for the Intellectually Disabled and Anaphylaxis Ireland.

Thanks to all those who helped and supported the event. Video Clips and images are up on the www.stephenrochetourdecure.com site now. Thanks to IrishCycling who plugged the event also and Ciaran Fallon for who was our Official Event Photographer.
