Many of the country's top junior, veteran, senior 2 and 3 riders will line out in the Greenstar Gorey Three Day race, which starts at noon tomorrow in Brittas. This year’s event will feature a massive field of riders this year with 190 cyclists taking part. The race gets underway with a mainly flat 60 mile road stage from Brittas to Gorey. Traffic congestion has meant a slight change to the finish, with the riders due to sprint it out on a quieter road this year. Day two brings the customary 4 mile time trial on the outskirts of Gorey town, an early morning rendezvous which will open up valuable seconds between riders. The race leader must then endure a spate of attacks in the afternoon’s 60 mile road stage, which covers four laps of a 15 mile circuit. The field will then race a similar distance back to Brittas on Monday 12th. There will certainly be plenty of incentive to do well. A new sponsorship by Greenstar means that the race will feature a very generous prize list, with the first twenty riders overall taking home a minimum of 40 euro. There will also be prizes for unplaced veterans, juniors and teams, while the first eight riders on the three road stages will also be rewarded. Suki Ireland will also be supporting the prestigious event. The event is open to 2nd and 3rd category seniors, juniors, veterans and ladies. Previous victors include world junior champion Mark Scanlon and the 1987 Tour de France winner Stephen Roche, who won as a junior during the seventies.
