It's with great sadness that I inform you that Betty D'Arcy passed away this afternoon. She went into hospital just last January where she was diagnosed with having a suspect growth in her lower intestine. She subsequently had large tumour removed, she had been undergoing treatment in hospital up until last Monday after that she was transferred back to her hometown of Gorey.

For over 40 years Betty was one of the driving forces behind the Gorey 3 Day. One of the jobs she took on herself was to ensure that all the riders had good accommodation for the race. For many weeks before the race she would travel around Gorey and organise beds for over 100 riders. This year she was unable to do that and it upset her greatly.
On the 16th Feb she was let go home from hospital, during that time she compiled a list of 'B'&'B' s to put on the IrishCycling.com website. Betty was taken back into hospital shortly after she sent me the accommodation list. Just this week cycling friends who visited her said, she wanted the Gorey race to go ahead uninterrupted. no matter what her state of health was.
I was one of the lucky people to have known Betty, she was a really great woman, incredibly friendly and always a pleasure to meet.
My sincerest condolences to Sam and Betty's family and friends
May she rest in peace
Peter Purfield
