Prior to the start of today’s concluding session of the national track championships in Sundrive Road, the medals for the individual pursuit and sprint competitions were allocated. Gold medals went to Simon Coughlan (Donamon Dynamos) and Heather Boyle (Ravens) in the pursuit races, while the quickest sprinters were Michael Mulcahy (Cycling Pursuits) and Jennifer O’Reilly (Ravens).

Friday evening saw the qualifying sessions being held for the pursuit races, and those that would go on to win the titles showed their speed here. In the men’s race, Coughlan qualified quickest with a time of 5 minutes 1.47 seconds, over five seconds faster than the 5 minutes 6.81 posted by Colm Cassidy (Usher (IRC). National kilo champion Stephen Barrett (Fermoy) was third, clocking a time of 5 minutes 9.32 seconds.

Both riders went considerably quicker on Saturday, but while Cassidy improved to 4 minutes 58.94, Coughlan’s 4 minutes 55.84 was over three seconds better and secured gold. Barrett was comfortably faster than Conor McAllister (Ballymena) in clocking up 5 minutes 9.32.

The women were racing over 3km and Boyle was marginally quicker on Friday. Her 4 minutes 25.14 was just 0.17 faster than Roisin Kennedy (Lucan CC) but on Saturday the gap was much bigger, with almost six seconds between them. Both lifted their game, but Boyle’s 4 minutes 17.53 seconds was a big improvement. Caroline Ryan (Garda), clocking 4 minutes 10.35 seconds to take bronze ahead of Joanna Hickey (Usher IRC).

These three riders plus John Lynch (Bray), Gareth Enright (Dublin Wheelers) and Keith Meghen (Sundrive) came out best in the next qualifying round, while John Duggan (Cycling Pursuits) and Jason Howick (Bray) got through via repechages. The quarter final thinned things down further, with Mulcahy, Bannan, Whelan and Lynch coming out best, then Mulcahy beat Lynch and Whelan bested Bannan in the semis.

The final saw Mulcahy beat Whelan in two rounds, while Bannan came out on top in the scrap for bronze with Lynch. Howick, Meghen, Enright and Lynch took places five through to eight.

In the women’s sprint, O’Reilly’s 13.25 seconds was 0.24 better than Kate Rudd (Wolftrap). Louise Moriarty (UCD) and Joanna Hickey (Usher IRC) also came in under 14 seconds. These four progressed through the first round, along with Aideen Collard and Orla Hendron (Orwell Dundrum TC), while Cariosa Cullen (Sundrive) and Andrea Fagan (Orwell Dundrum TC) got through when they won their repechages.

O’Reilly, Rudd, Moriarty and Hickey then came out on top in the quarter final, with the first two of these going on to the final. Rudd won one sprint but O’Reilly took two and thus the gold; meanwhile, Moriarty beat Hickey 2-0 for bronze. Hendron, Fagan, Collard and Cullen took places five through to eight.

The programme concludes today with a number of other races.
