As expected, American rider Taylor Phinney dominated todays qualifying round of the mens individual pursuit in Pruszkow in Poland, recording a time of 4 minutes 15.16 seconds for the 4000 metre event.
Australian Jack Bobridge covered the distance in 4 minutes 17.419 seconds and will square off against Phinney in the gold medal final this evening.
Dominique Cornu (Belgium) and Volodymyr Diudia (Ukraine) were third- and fourth-fastest and consequently will go in the bronze medal final.
Irishman David OLoughlin had expected to be in contention for a medal but had an unexpected off day, being reeled in by his opponent Alexei Markov (Russia) and recording a time of 4 minutes 32.48 seconds.
This was almost twelve seconds slower than his sixth-place finish of last year and will be a big disappointment to the An Post M. Donnelly Grant Thornton Sean Kelly rider. He was third and then second in the past two World Cups, and had been going well in training.
Cycling Irelands Brian Nugent said that OLoughlin will have medical tests tomorrow to try to work out what went wrong. It just didnt work out, he stated. The week went as planned, everything was good with training and the warm up this morning was fine. He seemed on course for a fast time. David started to feel what seemed to be a cold coming on yesterday but we didnt want to make a big deal of it. He will go and see a doctor tomorrow and get some tests done.
We are obviously disappointed but its not the end of the world. We started a good programme for 2012 and while todays result was unexpected, we will stick with it and keep working.
OLoughlin was Irelands sole competitor in the world track championships, which runs until Sunday.
