Irish riders had some good performances at the first round of cycling’s World Cup in Manchester, with former British competitor Matt Brammeier making an excellent debut for Ireland when he finished fourth in today’s final of the scratch race.

Brammeier had finished just twelfth in heat one but made a strong improvement for the final. Ivan Kovalev (Russia) was first to the line.

National road race champion Heather Wilson won her heat in the women’s points race on Saturday. She had to be satisfied with fourteenth in the final, where Elizabeth Armitstead (Great Britain) was quickest, but it was a very encouraging performance in what is her first World Cup. Mary Costeloe was eighteenth in her heat.

The World Cup programme got underway on Friday with a number of events including the individual pursuit. David McCann was fourteenth in a time of four minutes 36.885 seconds, while Geraint Thomas (Great Britain) scorched to a fine win. He beat Bradley Wiggins’ Olympic record time in qualifying, clocking 4 minutes 15.015 seconds.

Wilson and Costelloe were thirteenth and seventeenth in their heats of the women's scratch race. Belinda Goss (Australia) went on to win the final.

On Saturday, David O’Loughlin opted to ride the points race instead of the individual pursuit. He was sixteenth in heat one of the event, which was taken by eventual winner and former FBD Rás champion Chris Newton (Great Britain).

Apart from the aforementioned men’s scratch race, today also saw the men’s team pursuit qualifying and final. The Irish quartet of McCann, O’Loughlin, Brammeier and Stephen Barrett were thirteenth, covering the 4000 metre distance in four minutes 20.589 seconds.

The British quartet of Steven Burke, Edward Clancy, Ben Swift, Geraint Thomas had a superb ride, their 3 minutes 54.395 seconds just over a second outside the world record clocked up by GB in last year’s Olympic Games.
