Thirteen-time national cyclo cross champion Robin Seymour showed he is building form in advance of next month’s title race when he took two victories over the weekend. The Team WORC rider finished over two minutes clear of the rest of the field on Saturday in the rain-lashed Ulster Cyclo Cross championship event in Castle Park, Bangor.

As Seymour is from Wicklow, the title of Ulster champion went to Apollo CC rider Andy Layhe, who outsprinted Ray Brownfield (TND) in a close finish. Owen Jeffries (Dave Kane) took the bronze medal, while the impressive junior winner Alistair McSorley (Apollo) was next home, one place ahead of his brother Peter.

Robbie Lamont (XMTB) was seventh across the line, getting the prize for first veteran. Peter McConville (Newry) was eighth.

As regards the other categories, the women’s prize went to Dromara CC’s Caroline Adams. Liam McGreevy (under 16, Banbridge CC), Johnny Beers (under 14, XMTB), Robbie Lamont (under 12, XMTB) and Dan Runciman (under 10, Banbridge CC) won the underage events.

Reigning Irish champion Roger Aiken missed out on the senior race as he is currently away as part of the Commonwealth Games cycling squad in Majorca.

Seymour topped the podium for the second time twelve hours later when he raced to a clear win in the Leinster Championships in Kilcullen today. A total of 36 riders lined out in the race. Second place went to Niall Davis (IMBRC), with Robert Moore (Stamullen M. Donnelly) taking third. Neil Delahaye (IMBRC) had been in the bronze medal position during the event but lost out due to mechanical problems, finishing fourth.

Adam Kelly (Bray Wheelers) and WORC’s Philip Roche were fifth and sixth, the latter taking the prize for the best senior 2 rider ahead of team-mate Gareth Gormley and Barry Donnelly (Kilcullen – Murphy Surveyors).

Evan Ryan (unattached), Brian Conway (IMBRC) and Peter O’Farrell (unattached) were first home in the senior 3 category. Tarja Owens was best woman, WORC beat IMBRC for the team prize and F. Newton (Usher IRC) was first underage competitor.
