Robin Seymour yesterday took an exceptional fifteenth consecutive Irish MTB cross country championship, beating closest competitors Conor McConvey and Niall Davis by 28 and 37 seconds respectively.

Racing in Kilruddery Estate near Bray, the Team WORC rider ended the first of seven laps level on time with McConvey but had pulled 18 seconds ahead by the end of the next. Davis had lost contact early on and was 31 seconds back at this point.

Seymour continued on alone, adding between ten and twenty seconds to his advantage over McConvey on each of the next three laps. He slowed towards the end, with his young rival taking 43 seconds back on the final lap, yet still finishing 28 behind.

The Wicklow man will continue his preparations for the Olympic Games in Beijing, where he will ride the XC mountainbike event on August 23rd.

Caitlin Elliot was almost four minutes ahead of Ciara McManus in the women’s race, with Fiona Barrett third. Elliot was quicker on each of the four laps and finished three minutes 40 seconds clear of McManus.

Liam McGreevy was even more dominant in the junior competition, finishing well ahead of Paul O’Reilly and Johnny Beers. He got clear of those and the rest of the field on the opening lap and was four minutes 59 seconds clear of O’Reilly by the finish.

There were good battles in all the other races: Peter Buggle dominated the Veteran’s event, beating John Darce by seven minutes 24 seconds and William Mulligan by a further 26. James McCluskey was 59 seconds quicker than Peter O’Farrell in the Masters’ contest, where Stuart Galloway took bronze. Andrew Godfrey, Oisin Boydell and Luke Manning were the medallists in the Expert race.

In the other events, Alan Raw beat Martin O’Reilly and Rudolf Brinkman in the Sport contest, while
Anne Duff got the better of Jacqueline O’Haean and Una May in the Sport women’s race. The underage events were also hotly fought: Matthew Adair finished a minute 29 seconds ahead of William Bajd and two minutes 36 up on Robert Scanlon in the under 16 event, while Ben Gregory was over a minute clear of Robert Anderson and Chris Oakley in the under 14 clash. Mark Dowhey beat James Curry and Rachel Mceyne in the under 12 race.
