Irish XC champion Robin Seymour came out best in the opening round of the Irish and Ulster National Points Series, held in Castlewellan Forest Park on Sunday. The Wicklow rider won out despite a bad crash on the first of six laps, tussling with Niall Davis (IMBRC) and visiting rider Adrian Lansley (Pedalon.co.uk) for much of the race. He eventually took top world ranking points when he finished 39 seconds ahead of Davis and 3 minutes 25 seconds up on Lansley.

Lewis Ferguson (Team BHB), James McCluskey (Team WORC), Glen Kinning (XMTB), junior rider Conor McConvey (XMTB) and Tim Edgar (XMTB) took the other places in the top eight.

Jenny McCauley (Bray Wheelers) was a clear winner of the women’s race, ending the four lap event 2 minutes and 16 seconds ahead of Tarja Owens (Team WORC). XMTB riders Ciara McManus and Joanne McCallum were third and fourth.

The new Experts Class saw Damian Mulchrone (EPIC) finish ahead of Newry's Peter McConville and Dave Gill (WORC). XMTB rider Robbie Lamont came out best in the veterans’ race, finishing just 2 seconds ahead of William Mulligan (Banbridge CC) and a minute and two up on Johnny McCabe (Cuchulain). John Doris (Sorrento) was almost two minutes clear in the Masters event, beating Gerry McCabe, Banbridge rider Paul Anderson and Andy Wallace (Dave Kane).

XMTB's Graham Boyd was victorious in his debut as a junior, fairing best against team-mate Andy Godfrey, Robert McCabe (Cuchulainn) and Peter McKeown (XMTB). Meanwhile a good field of 35 riders lined out in the sports race, which was won by Gerald McVeigh. Rob Cummins (Naas Wheelworks) and Richard Felle (IMBRC) were second and third.

Of the underage riders, Sean Downey (Banbridge CC) finished clear of Neil McGimpsey (XMTB) and his own team-mate Liam McGreevy in the U16 race. All three had ridden CI’s road selection race for the Sean Kelly Academy the previous day.

There was another win for Banbridge in the under 14 event, where Michael Runciman bested XMTB's William Boyd and Jack Wilson (East Antrim). The same team also triumphed in the under 10 and under 8 races, with James Curry finishing ahead of team-mate Thomas Magenis (Banbridge CC) and Ty Mackness (Madigan) in the first, and Rachel Mayne (Banbridge CC) coming out best against Kain McConvey (Newry) and Richard Baird (Banbridge CC) in the second.

The only youth race Banbridge didn’t take top slot in was in the under 12 contest. Robbie Lamont (XMTB) finished ahead of Mark Downey (Banbridge CC), Chris Oakley (XMTB) and his sister Claire.
