EIRCOM ASSISTING POPHAM’S WORLD CUP CAMPAIGN
Promising young Irish downhill rider Jamie Popham recently got the much-needed boost of financial backing from Eircom for the remainder of the 2005 season. The Bray rider was amongst the athletes controversially overlooked for funding by the Irish Sports Council at the start of the season. While he was able to appeal this, the amount awarded was still considerably less than he needed to run a full World Cup campaign.
Popham had ridden solidly in World Cup events in Canada and the US, placing 36th and 40th , but looked set to miss the last two rounds in the series when he ran out of money. Eircom stepped in to enable him to finish out his season as planned.
Popham competed in the seventh round in Pila, Italy towards the end of August and finished 71st out of 203 riders, despite a crash.
He had another fall in the world championships last weekend, crashing heavily on the morning of the downhill race during practice. It was thought he would have to pull out of the championships but he insisted on riding, finishing 62nd.
Following the race, a doctor travelling with the American team helped out, performing minor surgery and giving Popham six stitches. He is 73rd in the World Cup series, which concludes this weekend in Fort William.
