FOUR MEDALS FOR IRISH RIDERS IN MASTER'S WORLD MTB CHAMPS

Saturday was an impressive day for Irish MTB riders, with Meave Baxter taking an excellent silver medal at the World Masters� championships in Praloup, France, and Peter Buggle, Beth McCluskey and Andy Yoong each netting superb bronze medals.

Baxter finished as runner up to Nathalie Dappen (Switzerland) in the women�s 30-34 downhill, with fellow Irishwomen Michelle McMullan and Nathalie Jedda taking fifth and seventh.

Buggle placed third in the men�s 45 � 49 XC race, finishing six minutes and five seconds behind the Italian winner Gilberto Perini. McCluskey took her result in the women�s 30- 39 category, coming home seven minutes off the pace of the victor Daniela Veronesi (San Marino). Yoong�s fine result came in the 30-34 downhill race, with the Irishman finishing 10.46 behind Pau Misser (Spain).

A number of other Irish riders competed in the same race; of these, Dale McMullan, Michael Cowan and Mark Tiernan were to the fore, placing 12th, 16th and 23rd.

Derek Cowen was a fine seventh in the 60+ downhill, while Ian McIntyre, Joe Ward and Geoff Walker were 12th, 14th and 18th in the 35 � 39 downhill.

Irish competitors also took part in two other DH events; Stephen Davidson and Colin Finley were 25th and 34th in the 40-44 race, while Peter Popham was 26th in the 50-54 contest.
