BROKEN COLLARBONE RUINS MCSORLEY'S WORLDS PLANS

Promising junior rider Alistair McSorley has been forced to cancel plans to take part in the world cyclo cross championships, running in Zedam in the Netherlands on January 28th and 29th. The Apollo CC rider had a bad fall while competing in a race in Luxembourg last Monday and shattered a collarbone, putting him out of action for the next six weeks.

Although McSorley is still a junior rider, he has impressed in several cross races this season. He was fourth in the Tymon Park Classic on November 27th and fifth across the line in the Ulster cross championship event one week later. He was also fourth in the Team Madigan Cyclo Cross on December 10th. As a result of his strong showing, Cycling Ireland had decided to send him to compete in the junior event at the world cyclo cross championships.

Its very unfortunate news, said Geoff Seymour of Cycling Ireland today. Alistair had been approved to go, he is our top junior rider after making a big improvement this year. However he damaged his collarbone quite badly when he fell and is now off the bike. Its his last year as a junior so it is a big blow for him.

McSorley had been due to be Irelands sole entrant in the cross worlds. The injury means that has also been forced to withdraw from the Irish cyclo cross championships tomorrow. He would have headed into the race with realistic expectations of a high placing.
