Belgian rider Niels Albert completed a spectacular comeback from a ruptured spleen sustained in November when he won the world cyclo cross championship in Hoogerheide, the Netherlands, today.
Albert went clear early on and rode the rest of the race solo, hitting the line 22 seconds ahead of Zdenek Stybar (Czech Republic). World Cup winner Sven Nys (Belgium) had yet another frustrating world campaign, being unable to repeat the dominance he has shown in most of the races this year. He was third, 38 seconds back.
Roger Aiken was Ireland’s sole competitor, but was a non-finisher in the race.
Meanwhile Marianne Vos repeated her 2006 victory in the women’s event, outsprinting defending champ Hanka Kupfernagel. The latter did most of the work during the race, with Vos marking her closely then jumping past inside the final 400 metres. Kathy Compton (United States Of America) took bronze. .
On Saturday, Philipp Walsleben (Germany) won the under 23 race, while Tijmen Eising (Netherlands) was best of the junior riders. Gavin Mannion – the son of former Tuam cyclist Tommy Mannion – was 30th. He was born in the US and competed for their national team.
