National champion Robin Seymour had a tough time at the Olympic mountain bike cross country event today, pulling out of the eight-lap race before the end.

France dominated the event, with Julien Absalon finishing one minute seven seconds ahead of his team-mate Jean-Christophe Peraud (France). Nino Schurter (Switzerland) took bronze, a further 46 seconds back.

Fifteen-times Irish title holder Seymour had previously finished 28th in Sydney and 30th in Athens. However he was clearly off form today, and said afterwards that he was below par due to illness.

“I had a blood test. My white cell count is high which means I am fighting infection. My other values are all over the place…disaster.”

Seymour completed the four-rider Irish campaign. Nicolas Roche and Philip Deignan were 64th and 81st respectively in the Olympic road race, while David O’Loughlin was eleventh in the individual pursuit.
