STAGE 4, WEDNESDAY 20th MAY, CAHIRCIVEEN – KILLORGLIN, 178 KMS.
Cahirciveen, Glenbeigh, Killorglin, Milltown, Castlemaine, Boolteens, Inch, An Draighneain Category 3 KOM, Anascaul, Anascaul Category 3 KOM, Camp, Stradbally, Conor Pass Category 1 KOM, An Daingean, Ballintaggart Category 3 KOM, Líos Póil, Garraí na dTor Category 3 KOM, An Draighneain Category 3 KOM , Inch, Boolteens, Castlemaine, Milltown, Killorglin.
Killorglin is the finish location for stage four, the uphill sprint to the line coming after the wearying riders complete another marathon – and gruelling - day in the saddle. Over the course of 178 kilometres they will slug it out over five category three climbs, at An Draighneain, Anascaul, Ballintaggart, Garrai na dTor, and An Draighneain once again. That’s tough enough by itself, but there’s also a very difficult category one climb to consider. The Conor Pass tops out just over 60 kilometres from the finish and will have a major effect, exposing any weaknesses and allowing the strongest riders to press their advantage.
--------
11.01: Good morning and greetings from Cahirciveen for the start of stage four of this year's FBD Ras.
11.06: The riders are about to leave the neutralised section. Today is another long stage, 178 kilometres to Killorglin. It crosses five category three climbs and the cat one Conor Pass.
11.07: They have started, with 154 riders lining out. Logan Hutchings (Australia Cinelli Down Under) and Michael Barry (Kildare Proejctor World) did not sign on.
11.09: Niko Eeckhout (Ireland An Post M. Donnelly Grant Thornton Sean Kelly), Paidi O'Brien (Ireland An Post M. Donnelly Grant Thornton Sean Kelly), Stephen Halpin (Ireland Development U23), Tom Southam (Britain Rapha Condor), Mark McNally (Britain Halfords Bike Hut), Kit Gilham (Britain C'Shire Sigmasport), Peter Hawkins (Dublin IRC Ushers Insulations) and Michael Fitzgerald (Dublin Eurocycles) attacked very soon after the start, and are pulling clear.
It was sunny this morning, but there are spits of rain hitting the windscreen. Once again, fingers crossed for the riders...
11.12: They have 15 seconds gap on a group of five, and 20 seconds on the main field.
The second group have been caught.
11.17: The eight leaders have a lead of 20 seconds over the main bunch, which has split slightly.
11.19: Morten Kruse Brink (Denmark Designa Kokken) is twelve seconds back now, chasing alone.
He crosses successfully. Two others are trying to do likewise, but separately. David O’Loughlin is one of those, and is attempting to join his Ireland An Post M. Donnelly Grant Thornton Sean Kelly team-mates Eeckhout and O’Brien.
11.22: O’Loughlin bridges across, while there is one other rider further back. We don’t think he’s going to make it.
11.24: There are now ten leaders, including O’Loughlin, and they are 34 seconds clear.
Stephen Barrett (Ireland National Team) and Barry Monaghan (An Dún Newry Wheelers) are now chasing, 26 seconds back. The peloton is 45 seconds behind.
11.30: Barrett continues alone, while Monaghan goes back to the peloton.
11.32: He is not going to make it - he is 52 seconds back. Peloton is at one minute and four seconds.
Barrett realises it’s impossible alone, and sits up.
A group tried to chase, but was reeled in shortly afterwards.
11.36: With 22 kilometres covered, the gap is 55 seconds.
The sun is out again. There’s some beautiful scenery around here, particularly when it’s bright.
There are crowds of schoolchildren waving flags by the side of the road. They will wait 57 seconds between cheers, as that’s the current gap from break to bunch.
11.40: Broadband coverage is bad in places – bear with us.
Mark Cassidy (Ireland An Post M. Donnelly Grant Thornton Sean Kelly), Paul Healion (Ireland National Team), Leon van Bon (China Trek Marco Polo), Darren Lapthorne (Britain Rapha Condor) and David Fletcher (Britain Halfords Bike Hut) are now chasing.
Josef Kugler (Austria Arbö KTM Junkers) joined up with the second group, which is in turn being chased by Sean Downey (Ireland National Team), Simon Richardson (Britain Rapha Condor) and Ian Wilkinson (Britain Halfords Bike Hut). They have been joined by Jan Barta (Austria Arbö KTM Junkers). However the presence of the yellow jersey and second-placed rider overall spelt danger for the peloton, and the move was closed down.
Sean Downey is now 100 metres clear of the main field. The Tour of Ulster winner is riding aggressively in this, his first FBD Rás. He is one minute and 22 seconds back, with several others between him and the main field.
11.50: He has been joined by seven chasers - Mark Cassidy (Ireland An Post M. Donnelly Grant Thornton Sean Kelly), Adam Armstrong (Ireland Development U23), Ian Bibby (Britain Halfords Bike Hut), Robert Wardell (Merseyside KuK Kinesis Bikes), Matthew Stephens (Britain C'Shire Sigmasport). Stephen Surdival (Dublin DTC Orwell Wheelers) and John Mason (Meath Engraveit.ie/BDBC).
However, almost immediately, Surdival punctured out of this group. That’s a pity – bad luck.
The others are 30 seconds ahead of the main field.
Up front, everyone bar Mark McNally (Britain Halfords Bike Hut) are riding though. As McNally’s team-mate is leading the race, he’s no obligation to ride.
11.56: We have been typing away but there’s no net connection right now. We’ll upload these updates as soon as we get back online. These two days in the southwest are likely to be the most problematic as regards coverage.
11.59: Graham Hurley (Dublin Dundrum Town Centre Orwell) is chasing the chase group.
In Killorglin, 37.3 kilometres after the start, the leaders are one minute and 52 seconds ahead of the chasers. The peloton is two minutes and 22 seconds back, and has reeled in Hurley.
12.07: Downey has a fast pedalling style – that’s a good habit. It will be interesting to see how he develops over the next year or two, but he’s promising.
The seven chasers are now one minute and 55 seconds back. The peloton is further back, but we don’t have a time check as yet.
12.12: The first hour of racing has been completed, and 46 kilometres have been covered.
There are four chasers further back, including Paul Healion (Ireland national team).
Of the seven riders in the first chase group, only five are going through. Cassidy is not working, as he has three team-mates up the road. Ian Bibby (Britain Halfords Bike Hut) is also sitting on, as his team-mate Ian Wilkinson is leading the race.
12.16: The seven chasers pass the 50km board one minute 55 seconds behind the ten leaders. There are five others at two minutes and 20 seconds, namely Paul Healion (Ireland National Team), Hannes Grundlinger (Austria Arbö KTM Junkers), Barry Monaghan (AN Dún Newry Whs. CC), Derek Burke (Dublin IRC Ushers Insulations) and Keith Gater (Waterford Comeragh CC). The main field is 2’35 back.
12.20: The leaders are pulling away; 2’05 back to the chasers, with the five man group at 2’32 and the peloton at 2’48.
12.21: Bibby sits up and goes back to the bunch to help Wilkinson. “You’re needed back there,” says our driver Alasdair McLennon. “Yeah,” says Bibby, with a smile.
12.25: The five chasers joined up with the six others, making it an eleven-man chase group.
12.37: After 65 kilometres, the eleven chasers are two minutes and 12 secconds back, with the peloton three minutes 30 seconds down.
The Ireland An Post M. Donnelly Grant Thornton Sean Kelly team is in a good position; it has three riders up front, and Mark Cassidy a passenger in the chase group.
David O’Loughlin was 7’12 back starting today, so he’s still over three and a half minutes off yellow. Mark McNally was a further thirty seconds down. They are the best placed riders from the front group.
12.47: Once past the stunning Inch strand, the leaders hit the first climb of the day, the category three An Draighneain (72.8km).
This was the order over the top:
Category 3 climb of An Draighneain, 72.8km:
1, Kit Gilham (Britain C'Shire Sigmasport), 5pts
2, David O'Loughlin (Ireland An Post M. Donnelly Grant Thornton Sean Kelly), 4
3, Michael Fitzgerald (Dublin Eurocycles), 3
4, Niko Eeckhout (Ireland An Post M. Donnelly Grant Thornton Sean Kelly), 2
13.00: Shortly afterwards, the riders crossed the day’s second climb; four more to go.
Category 3 climb at Anascaul (78.5km):
1, David O'Loughlin (Ireland An Post M. Donnelly Grant Thornton Sean Kelly) 5pts
2, Kit Gilham (Britain C'Shire Sigmasport) 4
3, Tom Southam (Britain Rapha Condor) 3
4, Michael Fitzgerald (Dublin Eurocycles) 2
The chasers are at two minutes and three seconds. Where’s the peloton? We are awaiting that timecheck...one moment.
13.05: The peloton is four minutes back...so the gap continues to grow. The chase group is inching closer, but not quickly.
It’s still sunny...we understand the weather is dodgy in other parts of Ireland, but right now, right here it’s pretty good.
13.08: The riders covered 86 kilometres in the first two hours of racing.
13.20: The chasing group is 1’46 back now....we are waiting for an update as to where the peloton is. It is now 4’45 back...so continuously losing time.
We expect the peloton to explode on the Conor Pass. After that point we’ll have a better indication as to what chance O’Loughlin or McNally have of taking yellow.
13.40: We have been out of broadband coverage – will put this info online when it’s back. It might be a while as we are about to go over the Conor Pass. As mentioned, we think coverage will generally be better after today...the Kerry mountains are always difficult as regards getting online.
Each year we consider calling the telecoms companies to ask why they don’t attach transmitters to sheep...there’s certainly enough of them around. I guess that’s a baaaaaaa’d idea.
Anyway, back to the important stuff. After 105 kilometres of racing, the bunch was five minutes and 20 seconds back... The gap keeps going out and out, although we expect the strongest riders to push forward on the Conor Pass. That should reduce the gap a bit.
13.47: The leading group has started the category 1 Conor Pass. The first part is pretty flat. At this 110 km point, the chasing group was one minute 52 seconds down. The yellow jersey group was 5 minutes 50 seconds back!
A few kilometres ago, Conor Murphy (Dublin IRC Usher Insulations) broke his chain....he’ll need a new bike.
13.56: The Britain Halfords Bike Hut team of Wilkinson have had a hard day...they have been doing all the work thus far.
Burke has been dropped by the chasing group. So too Barry Monaghan.
13.59: On the climb, Jan Barta attacked as soon as the slope reared up. He was joined by Stefan Poll, his Austria Arbo KTM Junkers team-mate
14.00: The chasers are now two minutes back. Robert Wardell (Merseyside KuK Kinesis Bikes) is having bike problems and is drifting back from this group. He had to stop and lost a minute and 50 seconds.
The two Austrians are pulling away from the yellow jersey group.
14.02: Further back, there are attacks firing. A Rapha Condor rider – quite possibly Newton – tried to get clear, but was covered.
Barta and Poll are four minutes 50 seconds back, while the peloton is five minutes off the lead group.
Darren Lapthorne has joined Barta and Poll. There are three other riders just ahead of the main group, which is being led by the yellow jersey. He’s isolated, but limiting his losses for now.
The Conor Pass is stunning.
Up front, Halpin and O’Brien were slightly tailed off from the front group as they went over the top, but they should get back on.
The front group has gone over the climb. The results there are:
Category 1 climb, Conor Pass (km117.5):
1, David O'Loughlin (Ireland An Post M. Donnelly Grant Thornton Sean Kelly) 15
2, Kit Gilham (Britain C'Shire Sigmasport) 12
3, Tom Southam (Britain Rapha Condor) 10
4, Niko Eeckhout (Ireland An Post M. Donnelly Grant Thornton Sean Kelly) 8
5, Mark McNally (Britain Halfords Bike Hut) 6
6, Morten Kruse Brink (Denmark Designa Kokken) 5
7, Peter Hawkins (Dublin IRC Ushers Insulations) 3
David McCann (Ireland National Team), Laurent Didier (Denmark Designa Kokken) and Alexander Gottfried (Germany Kuota-Indeland) have joined Barta, Poll and Lapthorne. That chase group is at 3’50 and
The chase group is at 3’50, and has been joined by Russell Downing (Britain Candi TV Marshalls), Sam Bennett (Tipperary Dan Morrissey) and Mads Christensen (Denmark Designa Kokken).
They were then joined by Jaco Venter (China Trek Marco Polo) and Chris Newton (Britain Rapha Condor).
14.12: The yellow jersey was gapped on the climb. A dozen or so riders got up to the Barta/Poll/McCann group, but Wilkinson is not there. He must be under pressure.
14.18: We have got confirmation of the 22 riders in the second chase group. They are:
Benny De Schrooder (Ireland An Post M. Donnelly Grant Thornton Sean Kelly), David McCann (Ireland National Team), Bert Roesems (Australia Cinelli-Down Under), Nicholas Walker (Australia Cinelli-Down Under), Jan Barta (Austria Arbö KTM Junkers), Stefan Pöll (Austria Arbö KTM Junkers), Josef Kugler (Austria Arbö KTM Junkers), Jacques j.v.Rensburg (China Trek Marco Polo), Jaco Venter (China Trek Marco Polo), Mads Christensen (Denmark Designa Kokken), Laurent Didier (Denmark Designa Kokken), Martin Grashev (Greece Heraklion-Nessebar), Alexander Gottfried (Germany Kuota-Indeland), Chris Newton (Britain Rapha Condor), Darren Lapthorne (Britain Rapha Condor), Kristian House (Britain Rapha Condor), Simon Richardson (Britain Rapha Condor), Russ Downing (Britain Candi TV Marshalls), Wouter Sybrandy (Britain C'Shire Sigmasport), Paul Griffin (Kerry Total Cleaning Supplies), Brian Kenneally (Meath Engraveit.ie/BDBC)and Sam Bennett (Tipperary Dan Morrissey)
14.20: They have caught the first chase group, which originally comprised Sean Downey (Ireland National Team), Mark Cassidy (Ireland An Post M. Donnelly Grant Thornton Sean Kelly), Adam Armstrong (Ireland Development U23), Ian Bibby (Britain Halfords Bike Hut), Robert Wardell (Merseyside KuK Kinesis Bikes), Matthew Stephens (Britain C'Shire Sigmasport). Stephen Surdival (Dublin DTC Orwell Wheelers) and John Mason (Meath Engraveit.ie/BDBC), Paul Healion (Ireland National Team), Hannes Grundlinger (Austria Arbö KTM Junkers), Barry Monaghan (AN Dún Newry Whs. CC), Derek Burke (Dublin IRC Ushers Insulations) and Keith Gater (Waterford Comeragh CC).
We think most of them are still up there, but are not certain.
14.33: The chasers are at one minute 20 seconds, with the yellow jersey group at two minutes 25 seconds.
Category 3 climb at Ballintaggart (km 127)
1, Kit Gilham (Britain C'Shire Sigmasport) 5pts
2, David O'Loughlin (Ireland An Post M. Donnelly Grant Thornton Sean Kelly) 4
3, Tom Southam (Britain Rapha Condor) 3
4, Morten Kruse Brink (Denmark Designa Kokken) 2
Category 3 climb at Garrai na Tórt (km 135)
1, David O'Loughlin (Ireland An Post M. Donnelly Grant Thornton Sean Kelly) 5pts
2, Michael Fitzgerald (Dublin Eurocycles) 4
3, Kit Gilham (Britain C'Shire Sigmasport) 3
4, Tom Southam (Britain Rapha Condor) 2
14.36: Okay, will get online now. Apologies for the delay – we had no broadband for quite some time due to being in some remote areas. Then we spent some time getting those names together. We hope to be on pretty constantly between now and the finish.
14.43: Rapha are driving it now on the front. Richardson looks to be riding into yellow. They are close to catching the lead group...
The leaders are about to cross the final climb of the day, that of An Draighneain (km 144.5). The chasers are 30 seconds back at this point, with the yellow jersey group further adrift.
The yellow jersey group is two minutes back...he’s losing the race lead.
Category 3 climb at An Draighneain (km 144.5)
1, David O'Loughlin (Ireland An Post M. Donnelly Grant Thornton Sean Kelly) 5pts
2, Kit Gilham (Britain C'Shire Sigmasport) 4
3, Tom Southam (Britain Rapha Condor) 3
4, Morten Kruse Brink (Denmark Designa Kokken) 2
The two front groups merged at Inch, 148 kilometres from the start and 30 from the end. The yellow jersey group was 1’35 back then.
15.00: The yellow jersey group is now 1’58 back...he’s going to be second, or maybe further back tonight.
15.06: The riders are inside 15km to go...
15.15: Not many changes to report now...the front group is driving the pace to try to gain time. Wilkinson’s group is slipping further and further back, dropping to two minutes 35 in arrears. The riders are well inside the last ten kilometres...
15.20: It’s now two minutes and 40 seconds.. No attacks from the front group, as the pace is so high. Rapha are doing all the work...is manager John Herety on the way to winning another FBD Ras with his riders?
15.23: The leaders are through four kilometres to go...will it be a sprint on the uphill finishing straight?
15.25: Three kms to go, Rapha Condor still lead that big bunch.. The yellow jersey group is now three minutes back..
15.26: Final kilometre...all together...
15.27: All together...
Waiting for the finish...
Nicholas Walker (Australia Cinelli-Down Under) wins the uphill gallop!
Jan Barta (Austria Arbö KTM Junkers) was second, ahead of points leader Downing.. Big group..
The yellow jersey will be at least three minutes back...that means he's down to second or third overall. Richardson will be in yellow..
15.32: Wilkinson leads the next group over the line, but the jersey is long gone...that's a pity for him.
Some superb tactical riding there today. We think David O'Loughlin might be in the mountains jersey, but that's not certain.
Rapha Condor had an incredible ride, putting all their riders up there and then driving the front group home. Very impressive.
15.36: We are waiting for results....bear with us for a few mintues to get a better idea of how things stand..
Here's the provisional results - come back later for a report, full results and photos. It was a great day's racing, and a FBD Ras which looked predictable a couple of days ago is now much more open again.
Thanks for reading!
