WESTPORT GRAND PRIX

Michael Redden of the Dublin Wheelers an unfamiliar name on the circuit of recent years, soloed to victory in the Westport Grand Prix held yesterday over 64 miles in Co. Mayo. Redden was part of a nine man group who successfully detached themselves from the main group with 10 miles to go.

Realising that his sprinting was not up to scratch and that he was not well known in the break, he went for broke in the last three miles to win comfortably in the town of Westport.

HAWKINS WINS IN WESTPORT

Minutes prior to the start of the Westport Grand Prix on Saturday evening, spectators and competitors were sent scurrying for shelter from the sudden downpour of rain.

Thankfully it only lasted minutes before the riders assembled on the start line for the Grand Prix over forty minutes and three laps. The course was 7/8ths of a mile and the competitors were averaging on the minute mark.

In an eagerly fought race, Peter Hawkins the reigning criterium champion showed his skills by edging out Ritchie McCauley for the honours.

Midway through the event, six riders broke clear of the main pack and went on, not only to fight out the finish, but they lapped the entire field in the process.

It was evident from the group that they were not overawed by the presence of Hawkins in his distinctive criterium jersey.

Included in the group were Stephen Surdival of the Dundrum Town Centre/Orwell Wheelers CC, Michael Redden of the Dublin Wheelers CC, Daniel Kirwan of Stagg Cycles Lucan CC, Simon Kelly from the same stable as Hawkins, the Usher Irish Road Club and Ritchie McCauley who won hi first open race at the tail end of May in the Bray Wheelers colours but now of Wining Solutions.

It was noticeable that Surdival was very keen to put his stamp of authority on the event, making several bursts to go off the front. Unfortunately an ambitious competitor who got lapped by the group smothered his chance by chasing him down.

So, as to avoid any confusion, the race commissarie, pulled out all of the lap competitors for the final three laps, this enabling the sextet the freedom to contest the final laps of the event without any interference.

In the dash to the line up the main thoroughfare of Westport, McCauley made a brave effort to snuff out the break, but his effort was in vain, when Hawkins who has just returned from the Surrey Five day which he led from on day one to put his wheel in front on the line.

In the ladies section Francine Meehan from the Tullamore CC took the honours.

Race organiser Joe McGuire thanked the public for braving the conditions and acknowledged that their presence around the circuit lifted the competitors to brighten up the on a dull and damp evening. “The support of the local authorities, the business people of the town the, stewards ( unsung heroes) and the Gardai who made the event as success on the night,” said Joe.
