Completing his final race in advance of this Wednesday’s start of the Tour of Ireland, Daniel Martin finished an excellent tenth overall and second in the best young rider classification in the Tour of Portugal.
The 2.HC-ranked race finished with a 31.2 kilometre individual time trial to Felgueiras. Hector Guerra Garcia (Liberty Seguros) was quickest, clocking a time of 43 minutes and 3 seconds, while Martin was three minutes one second back in eighteenth.
David Blanco Rodiguez (Palmeiras Resort – Tavira) placed second in the time trial and fended off Guerra Garcia’s general classification challenge, holding on to win the race. Martin finished eight minutes and four seconds back, dropping one place to tenth overall and also going from first to second in the young rider rankings.
However he can nevertheless be very satisfied by his performance in the twelve-day race. The first year professional has just turned 22 years of age and is one of the most promising young talents in the sport.
He will now travel to Ireland with his Garmin Cipotle squad for the Irish race, which starts in Dublin on Wednesday and concludes on Sunday in Cork.
