With just today’s final stage of the Tour of Portugal remaining, first year Irish professional Daniel Martin is en route to another fine season result. The 22 year old is leading the best young rider classification and is also an excellent ninth overall, five minutes 25 seconds behind race leader David Blanco Rodiguez (Palmeiras Resort - Tavira).

Martin has been riding strongly on the climbs in the race and continued that trend on Friday and Saturday, netting two top-ten results. He was tenth on the lumpy eighth stage to Fafe, crossing the line in a group four seconds behind the winner Candido Joaquim Venda Moreira Barbosa (Benfica).

He was then a fine eighth on yesterday’s stage nine to Mondim de Basto, which featured two category two climbs plus three category one ascents, including the summit finish. Juan Jose Cobo Acebo (Scott - American Beef) triumphed while Martin was one minute 39 seconds back.

The 2.HC race concludes with a 31.2 kilometre time trial from Penafiel to Felgueiras.
