Irish pro Daniel Martin was an excellent seventh on today’s summit finish of the Tour of Portugal, reaching the line twelve seconds behind the day’s winner Nuno Ribeiro (Liberty Seguros). He finished just five seconds behind a group of riders who were sprinting for second place on the 177.8 kilometre leg from Póvoa de Varzim to Santo Tirso.
The 22 year old Garmin Chipotle rider remains eleventh overall, but reduced his deficit slightly to ongoing race leader Rui Miguel Sousa Barbosa (Liberty Seguros). He is five minutes 26 seconds back heading into tomorrow’s eighth stage, a 169.8 kilometre leg from Barcelos to Fafe. This features the two second-category climbs of Covide and Caniçada.
Martin remains the leader of the classification for the best young rider. The 2.HC ranked event finishes on Sunday. The national road race champion will then line out in the Tour of Ireland, which starts in Dublin next Wednesday.
