On Aug 29th-31st history will be made when Ireland send their first Junior Women's Team to race overseas, in Paderborn, Germany.
Following her impressive season, and good results in the Kerry Youth Tour, Underage Rider Ciara Mulholland has also been selected to race in the Underage Events in Paderborn .
IRISH DEVELOPMENT TEAMS - SENIOR
Three senior Irish Development Teams have been announced for the 2008 season. For the first half of the season the Women's Commission encouraged members of the Development Squad to increase their skills and speed by racing in Kermesses in Belgium. Following results in these races, and races in the National Championships and National League races, teams were selected to race in events in the latter half of the season.
Earlier this month an Irish Team raced in a stage race in Usquert, Holland, producing encouraging results. Kate Rudd came 4th in the crit in Stage 3, and Heather Wilson was 21st rider in GC, out of 130 riders.
Next up is Paderborn in Germany, where the team will get valuable experience in Crit racing. There are a few changes to the team that raced in Usquert, but crit expert Kate Rudd will stay on the team, hoping to get on the podium, having just missed out by inches earlier in the month.
The Rás na mBan Team has been announced this week. We are fielding are strong team this year, including junior rider Elaine Cawley. The Team's aim this year is ensure it is an Irish victory in Sneem, Co. Kerry.
INTERNATIONAL RACING
This year women's cycling is growing in strength. We have had encouraging performances from riders on all levels, with our elite riders improving their form throughout the season - just in time for the World Championships.
Last week National Champion Siobhan Dervan recorded one of the top results in her career, riding well in the Route de France Féminine (the women's equivalent to the Tour de France) finishing in 24th place. Siobhan was riding for her Fenixs teammates, and their team ended up in 5th place.
Louise Moriarty and Heather Wilson are also racing well in Holland and Belgium, while National TT Champion, Olivia Dillon, recently won her District Championships in US. These three riders will be challenging for the two Time Trial places on offer for the World TT Championships in Varese this summer.
PARALYMPICS
Finally - the Women's Commission would like to wish the Paralympic Team the best of luck in Beijing next month. The Female tandem of Catherine Walsh and her pilot Joanna Hickey have been getting great results so far this year - and along with the rest of the team are on their final taper before the big one in Beijing!
