DAVE MCCALL REMEMBERED

Editor,

Like all the cycling family I was shocked and saddened to read about the tragic accident which resulted in the loss of Davy McCall.

While I hadn't met the guy in over 10 years I remember him well riding on Northern teams on the Ras in the 1980's where 'wee Davys' ability to turn a 52x13 on the flat was legendary.

I also remember him on the Girvan in 1985 / 1986 where I was on the NCA team and Davey was on the NICF team managed by big Mo. Always a decent guy with incredible enthusiasm for the sport, the irony is that his desire to stay involved as long as he did finally claimed his life.

I think now of all the guys who have lost their life's in accidents, Des Hanlon, Donal Crowley, Mark Graham ( Bo's brother) who I roomed with in the Tour of Luxembourg in 1986 and now Davey McCall. These guys will make some TTT on the other side!

From the Isle of Man (13 Aug)

On behalf of myself and the many cyclists in the Isle of Man who also knew and raced against him, I would like to express our collective sorrow at the tragic news of Dave McCall's death.

Dave was not only a great competitor and a welcome visitor to these shores but also a true sportsman and a great ambassador for the sport we all love.

His cheery smile and humour will be greatly missed.

Lionel Cowin,
Former Isle of Man Team Manager
