Nicolas Roche remains sixth overall after the fourth stage of the Tour de Wallonie, the young Irish rider ending the day nineteen seconds behind the race leader Greg Van Avermaet (Silence – Lotto).

The 201.9 kilometre stage to Seraing was marked by a large breakaway. Gianni Meersman (Française des Jeux) finished eight seconds ahead of Geert Verheyen (Mitsubishi-Jartazi) and a further six ahead of Danilo Wyss (BMC Racing Team).

Roche came in as part of a 23 man group sprinting for ninth place, four minutes and seven seconds back. He was twentieth past the line, with Avermaet also in the same group.

The latter leads the points classification, with Roche eleventh. The Irish Crédit Agricole competitor is eighth in the intermediate sprints ranking.

The 2.HC event concludes tomorrow with a 175.3 kilometre race from Welkenraedt to Aubel.
