Another great night at the Wicklow Ladies League.

A total of 17 ladies signed up to the 3rd race in the league. Fiona Duggan and Ailbhe Ivory took to an explosive sprint and came so close together over the finish line – impossible to call on the night. We had two winners, Junior Rider Ailbhe Ivory, and Fiona Duggan, both Bray Wheelers. While we thought it was a very brave win of Junior Ailbhe, it was not discovered until after the race that Fiona had ridden on a bike with a badly rubbing backwheel!

Three groups were sent off in this handicapped race, and over 5 laps it looked like they would never come together until, just at the top of the climb towards Cullenmore in the final lap the main field came together. There were still three riders ahead of that field, though, and they looked unlikely to be beaten as they were already approaching the finishing straight. Newcomer Sarah Corcoran (unattached) rode a fantastic race and hang in with Ailbhe Ivory and Fiona Duggan until the very end, bravely fighting her way back whenever she looked likely to be dropped. As appears to be tradition at this stage, Jen O’Reilly (Ravens) outsprinted the field yet again, this time beating Roisin Kennedy (Lucan CC) who put up a great fight to 4th place.

Meanwhile, the first ever Wicklow Ladies League Underage Race was underway, with the Bray Wheelers’ Isabel Loughran and Caoimhe Ivory battling things out between them. Caoimhe crossed the finish line first for a first win of an Underage Race within the Wicklow Ladies League. Well done, girls!
A double win for the Ivory girls again – they had only taken their age group wins in the Bray Wheelers Underage racing the night before. A force to be reckoned with.

Back to the drawing board for the 4th race on 12th August for the handicappers. Thank you to all the Marshals and helpers without whom we could not stage these races. Also a big thank you to Fiona Duggan for her lovely fairy cakes last night.
